The Validation Trap If they had submitted, the Recording Academy would have weaponized their acceptance. The Shiny Distraction: The Grammys would have put a big spotlight on the new "Best Asian Pop Music Performance" category during the main broadcast. They would have used BTS to make it look like a historic, progressive milestone for diversity. The Shield: Behind the scenes, the voting committees would have used that nomination as a shield to completely exclude them from Album of the Year or Record of the Year. They would have said, "Look, we gave them their own category, what more do they want?" 2.
