Fantastic final of Calderglen’s Youth and Philanthropy Initiative. Six S3 groups represented their chosen charities so well. Congratulations to the Emmaus girls. Your presentation was described by YPI as one of the best they’ve seen across the country.

For the first time in many years, Ramadan and Lent, the fasts of the two largest world faiths, started on the same day. In some places, members of both religions celebrated this together. ✝️ ☪️ bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Today marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan for our Islamic community. Muslims will be fasting during daylight hours and be even more observant during this holy month. The fast (Sawm) is one of the five pillars of Islam. ☪️

Today is Shrove Tuesday - the day before the Christian fast of Lent. Traditionally all the good l, sweet stuff would be used up today. So Pancakes are made or, in the French speaking world, it’s Mardi Gras - Fat Tuesday.

Interesting story about new homes in Scotland to have bricks designed for swifts, swallows and house martins to nest in. These once common birds have become endangered partly due to lack of suitable breeding sites. theguardian.com/environment/20…

Recent stolperstein (Holocaust memorial stone, placed in memory near their home) placed in Edinburgh in memory of the Scottish victim, the Christian teacher Jane Haining, who stayed with her Jewish pupils until the end.

Visit to Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre, Conishead Priory near Ulverston in Cumbria. A Buddhist monastery and world peace centre. Well worth a visit.

Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish community. Our thoughts with those who were lost today in the horrific antisemitic attack in Australia.

Lovely tribute to the Scot who would not leave her pupils and went with them to Auschwitz. She has been memorialized with a brass stolperstein or “slipping stone”. These can be found over Germany outside a place of importance to a victim of the Holocaust. bbc.com/news/articles/…

Sorry kids, but this is REAL Halloween. Only a few teachers (like me) will remember carving out a turnip and going guising- not the American trick or treating. Actually real Halloween is the Celtic festival of Samhain. It was “borrowed” by Christianity as All Hallows Eve.

Many thanks to Dougie and Bonnie 🐶 from the charity Therapets who came into school today to be interviewed by a group of S3 pupils. The boys have chosen to represent Therapets for their Youth and Philanthropy Initiative. One of our many partner charities that support us.
