🔵 Update on Calgary extortion investigations 🔵 In recent months, we have shared information about extortion attempts targeting the South Asian community in Calgary & our efforts to investigate these crimes. We have worked closely with our law enforcement partners from across the country to strengthen our collaboration, which has helped us share information faster, identify suspects more effectively & co-ordinate our responses. 📊 Since the beginning of January 2025, 41 extortion attempts connected to this series have been reported in Calgary, including 17 shootings. These investigations remain active & we have identified several suspects & continue to collect evidence to pursue criminal charges. As part of this work, we have referred 45 names to @CanBorder, which has resulted in several removal orders for suspects believed to be operating in Calgary. We want the community to know that we are working closely with our partners to ensure public safety in Calgary. We are committed to sharing more information as our criminal investigations progress. 📣 If you have information about these incidents, please report it to police or @stopcrimeyyc anonymously. 🔗 To learn more about this extortion series, visit our website: calgary.ca/cps/community-…

This week, 4 Calgarians graduated from a program called the Calgary Drug Treatment Court, after months of intensive treatment, frequent court appearances & full accountability for their actions. This is not an easy option & not a way to avoid consequences. Participants plead guilty, remain under strict court supervision, submit to random drug testing & do the daily work of addressing both addiction & the trauma behind it. ✅ Nearly 70% of graduates have no new substantive convictions at 6 years following graduation ✅ Graduates leave drug-free, crime-free & employed Drug Treatment Court treats addiction as the root cause of offending, reducing crime, improving public safety & helping people rebuild their lives for good. Congratulations to this week’s graduates & to a program delivering real accountability & real results for Calgary. ℹ️ Learn more about the program at calgarydrugtreatmentcourt.org.

🔵 CHARGES LAID 🔵 A man has been charged with drug trafficking & exporting offences after 15.5 kilograms of drugs were discovered in luggage at the Calgary International Airport. 📍 At about 9:35 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) requested assistance after opening a checked bag that had been flagged during routine X‑ray screening. Inside the bag, screening officers found three large packages containing an unknown substance. When our officers arrived, they observed 3 individually wrapped bags containing a crystal‑like substance believed to be crystal meth. The contents of the luggage weighed a total of 15.5 kilograms, with an estimated street value of $780,000. Working with airport staff, officers identified the luggage’s destination & confirmed the gate to locate the suspect. A man was arrested without incident after boarding a Vancouver‑bound aircraft. Investigators believe the suspect planned to travel to New Zealand using connecting flights. 📌 Lloyd Tei MATAAFA, 38, has been charged with 1 count of possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking & 1 count of possession for the purpose of exporting other drugs. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, March 20, 2026. We thank our partners at the Calgary International Airport & CATSA for their vigilance and assistance with this case. 🔎 NEED TO IDENTIFY 🔍 We are asking for the public's assistance in locating a man believed to be responsible for 2 attempted carjackings last week. 📍 On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at approx. 1:30 p.m., a woman was in the driver's seat of her vehicle, parked in the 200 block of Ninth Ave. S.E., when a man opened the door & threatened to kill her. The woman fled the vehicle with her keys. The man entered the vehicle & after unsuccessfully attempting to drive it, got out & began approaching other vehicles in oncoming traffic. 📍 At approx. 2:15 p.m., the same man approached another parked vehicle in the 700 block of Sixth Ave. S.W., opened the driver's door & forcibly removed the female driver before entering. The man was once again unable to operate the vehicle since the driver still held the keys. He stole the driver's purse, then fled. 📣 Anyone with information about this man or these incidents is asked to contact police. As part of this week’s #FraudPreventionMonth theme, we’re highlighting online scams that show up through fake websites, fraudulent advertisements, impersonation messages & deceptive social media accounts. These scams are designed to look legitimate, making them difficult to spot. Stay safe online by keeping these steps in mind: ➡️ Be cautious of unexpected messages from people claiming to be banks, delivery companies, government agencies or even friends. ➡️ Avoid clicking unfamiliar links, as they may lead to malicious websites created to steal your personal information. ➡️ If someone asks for personal details, passwords or financial information, verify their identity through a trusted source before responding. ➡️ Use a strong, unique password and enable multi-factor authentication whenever possible. ➡️ Watch for deals that seem too good to be true on online marketplaces or advertisements. ➡️ Report suspicious activity to help protect others. 📣 If you have suffered financial loss or had your personal information compromised, please report it by calling the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or visiting @stopcrimeyyc at crimestoppers.org.

⚠️ On Friday, March 13, 2026, our traffic officers stopped a driver on Airport Trail N.E. who was travelling 102 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. The driver was issued a ticket for excessive speed.   Road safety is a shared responsibility. While enforcement plays an important role, preventing high‑speed incidents depends on drivers making responsible choices, obeying posted limits & staying mindful of others on the road. 🔗 Join the Drive to Zero: Calgary.ca/visionzero
