I took 1.7 million photos over 6 days to catch this photo of a commercial jet in front of the sun. The moment it happened, TWO floating prominences were visible, making this not just my best aircraft transit photo, but one of the luckiest of my career! Videos of the transit 👇

We’re super stoked for this event and Q&A with Colonel Joshua Kutryk (CSA Astronaut) hosted by @TELUS_Spark! We’ll be there with our space loving shenanigans and some solar telescopes to add to the experience after the talk! ☀️🔭😎 More information: sparkscience.ca/csa-astronaut-…

The Gannon geomagnetic storm was an amazing event from both sides of the pond. It was delightful to see all of the images from Europe, North America and from down under. The first 2 images are from the 10th and the last 2 are from the 11th.

Still find it very hard to believe we actually managed to have…clear sky, balmy weather, and the most amazing solar storm, all working in harmony on 10May24! 🤷‍♀️I often think I dreamt it, given the lack of particularly memorable opportunities again since Oct24..I live in hope🤞✨

The Creek has a story, will you help us tell it? We could use some extra hands to help us out on Discovery Day. If you have nature and biology knowledge, we can use you, or if you just want to direct people, we can use you as well! savenosecreek.com/dd-volunteer

Noctilucent Clouds or knockers are a June to August evening/morning event, they are caused by water/dust freezing in the upper mesosphere (75-85km), they occur during astronomical twilight, and are usually confined to the WNW, N, and ENE part of the sky. I usually start looking for them right as it gets dark otherwise they are washed out by sunlight. I have on the rare occasion photographed them throughout the night. Begin looking for them at the end of May, May 31st is the earliest I have caught them and the latest was August 13th.

The 2026 Noctilucent Cloud season should begin later this month. The typical window is late May to early August with prolific displays either side of the solstice. NLCs are beautiful and photogenic. More in the article... shorturl.at/oLLM4

Elk Island National Park is a wetland environment that birds, beavers, and moose thrive in. A giant block of ice becomes stranded on a subtle bedrock high when the Laurentide Ice Sheet was melting. The ice rotted in place creating extensive knob and kettle terrain. For info, check out “Wildlife, Landscapes, and Geology” and “The Scenic Geology of Alberta”. brokenpoplars.ca

I went out with the Wainwright Wildlife Society to a sharp-tailed grouse lek at sunrise this morning. One of the most amazing sights I have ever seen. brokenpoplars.ca.

Alberta, tell your MLAs and ministers to amend Bill 31 from permanent DST to permanent MST. DST is a hidden mandate to start work/school an hour earlier than MST (often before sunrise)!

Just returning from the Space Weather Workshop in time for a nice solar storm! This one is strong enough to bump us past G2-levels momentarily, but because the storm is slow, aurora shows at mid-latitudes might remain substorm driven. Watch for them over the next 12+ hours!

“Why not try Standard Time? Disregarding Albertans’ voices on a referendum is undemocratic and leaves us wondering what other referendum results the premier will ignore.” Tell MLAs to amend Bill 31 from DST to MST!

Minister @MartinLongUCP: Permanent DST would put Hinton sunrise past 8am for 5½ months, past 9am for 3½ months, as late as 10:07am! It’s a mandate to wake an hour early all winter. Preserve essential morning sunlight, amend Bill 31 to permanent MST!

Here is a better capture (sharper and a longer exposure) from last night (April 30) of the supernova in the galaxy NGC 5907. The supernova is a Type II, meaning it is (or was!) a giant star exploding and turning into a neutron star or black hole. Details in Alt Text.
