The fiber plant placed in the 90’s generally had/has (some of it’s still being used) WAY less capacity than anything being placed in the past 20 years - 10 years especially. I can only speak generally about other countries, but specifically in the US, the fiber actively being placed through the RBB (Rural Broandband) government grants will help build fiber networks out to passings in the countryside and towns/smaller cities. But that’s not dedicated to business/enterprise/industrial use.
In principle, building out large fiber networks is easy, but in practice it’s insanely complex, with little economies of scale, and costly to the point where a private business will never expeirence a ROI. This is why the US government is footing the bill to the tune of nearly 1 trillion dollars (if not more when all’s said and done).

The worst part about this take is that we'd be so much better off right now if the fibre projects would have completed. Now people are finally starting to realize that as you see more and more municipalities roll it out. Are we going to bite ourselves not building infra for AI?
