@DanielCowper I've still not read the last three idylls, but what's before's been wonderful... Especially the Vivien and the Elaine idylls. I think Tennyson was perhaps at his best with his glorious female characters, as in Lady of Shalott. As other replies have said, reading it aloud is best.

There’s some who disdain Tennyson’s Idylls of the King; recently the great Amit Majmudar condemned it as a fatal bore. I don’t understand why. I still find it vivid and original, full of charm and poignancy from beginning to end.

@GuzzleGuinness A “no kissing” rule never existed. This is Evangelical purity culture & American Puritanism influencing American Catholicism. Catholic cultures are cultures of tango & amore. French, Italian, Brazilian & most American Catholics are looking at this as crazy!

Catholic intimacy rules were designed for a world where you courted for 6 months & got married at 22. Applying “no kissing” rules to a 27 year old in a 2 year relationship heading toward marriage is cruel and legalistic torture.

@FischerKing64 Mayhap, but people do constantly watch things that have absolutely nothing to do with their experience -- often with anyone's experience, ever... Seems often the case with the immensely popular animoo for example.

I agree with all the people saying to read classical authors - the Greeks and all that. But if you’re dealing with someone pretty green - it would be better to bring them into 19th century novelists like Tolstoy or Flaubert. It’s closer to our experience than the Odyssey.
