@chckpeas @kleft13 @LenValyrian I feel like bending over backwards to make sure we see black kids and their parents as “idiots”, inspite of someone with significantly more experience trying to explain that you might be wrong and that the problem is in fact structural shows a profound issue with you.

@kleft13 @CamaraStokes @LenValyrian I’m sorry I refuse to make excuses for these idiot children and their idiot parents who refuse to give them life skills🤷‍♀️ secondly engaging with a foreign language teaches you how to apply phonetics to learn how to pronounce new words, something none of them attempted

I don’t think those children needed to know what “gauche” meant but they should be able to pronounce it. They should absolutely know silhouette & extraordinary by 12th grade. They should also know that silhouette was not used correctly

@JamieClass5 @LenValyrian I’ve both taught and have been a reading tutor for years. I obviously know it’s a problem. But it enrages me that instead of talking about solutions grown ass people like you are are mocking these kids and using it as a chance to flex your own knowledge. like???

Um…I knew these words in middle school. And I’m a middle school teacher. Both parents and schools are utterly failing students today. The average reading level of out 6th to 8th graders is 3rd grade. My students can’t even PRONOUNCE 3 or 4 syllable words, much less read them. So of course they don’t know any robust vocabulary and cannot memorize the academic vocabulary they are given (words from Science, Social Studies, Math, literary terms, etc.). It’s an epidemic, and no one is doing anything about it other than bitching on Twitter.

@JamieClass5 @LenValyrian I mean good for you? You also seem to be at least 60 years older than these children so i’m not sure what point you are making.

@CamaraStokes @LenValyrian Really? I never took French. Yet: Machine, gauche, panache, ganache, chef, champagne, chaise (lounge)…. Because I’m well read.

@sharkafilipova @LenValyrian only one child did i i believe. - It’s pretty common to add sounds that are not present when trying to sound outa word bc not all of the phonemes in english clearly have apparent letter sounds like AH sounding like AAAA

@123itsmeMary we’re def in a literacy crisis - what scares me is that we’ve just accepted it (i’ve been a reading teacher for 6 years)

@123itsmeMary honestly even Silhouette - i’ve been a reading teacher for years, it’s ok to stumble on borrowed words - less evidence that their phonics are bad and more evidence that they need to be reading more novels with different words. i’m more mad the sentence doesn’t make sense.

This is an overgeneralization of how we spend money on our students in a city that has one of the highest costs of living in the work. This budget includes rent, maintenance, fringe, supports, etc. Also $3B of this budget is charter school expenses.

New York City spends more money per pupil than many public-school districts—and yet its educational outcomes “are average at best,” @MarcNovicoff argues. He examines how the city’s education budget became untouchable, and what that means for students: theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/04/…

This piece makes some sharp critiques, but the argument that more school spending pushes families to leave NYC is puzzling, + discounts ways NYC's school budget serves as social safety net, incl: ~$2B for free 3-k/Pre-K, >$600m for free meals, free dental/vision at 100s of schls
