@WedgeLIVE I think bringing BCR "in-house" as well as safety ambassadors and violence interrupters is a great idea. FWIW

Combine the public works trash call center into 311. City auditor said he didn't even know the city had this until the consultant pointed it out. Consider bringing Behavioral Crisis Response in-house rather than as a contracted service.

@JoshMartinMpls The county is huge and does a much better job of setting up obstacles to engagement. The city assessors can be much more responsive and focused. Centralizing the services at the county level seems risky to me, and unlikely to save much money unless quality goes way down.

I’m open to exploring the other ideas. In particular, consolidating property assessments under Hennepin County seems to make a lot of sense. (2/2)

Absolutely not on the proposal to do away with full-time council members. (Or how it will end up working in practice, like other legislative bodies - full-time work for part-time pay.) (1/2)

MPD crime lab: consider using county state or 3rd party providers for some or all forensic services. Do we need park police? Consider consolidating park police with MPD. Cut the city council to half time and reduced staffing? The charter commission will love this idea.

The city attorney's legal interpretation that a veto means Barnette is eligible for a "neverending loop" of rejection sounds fun for him. Another option is Frey accepts he needs to get a nominee confirmed. Then he finds one that can. kare11.com/article/news/l…

According to the Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy—a well-regarded group—the first four big tech companies to report their earnings have disclosed that they have received, collectively, $51 billion in federal tax breaks in 2025. The big four are Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Tesla. They disclosed that they reported $315 billion in U.S. profits in 2025 and “collectively paid just 4.9 percent of that amount in federal corporate income taxes—with Tesla paying exactly zero.” “These tax breaks come on top of a far larger tax benefit that these companies enjoyed last year by virtue of the 2017 Trump tax cut’s reduction in the statutory tax rate from 35 to 21 percent. The baseline amount of tax owed on these companies’ $315 billion of U.S. income in 2025 would have been $44 billion higher absent the 2017 rate cuts.” When are the American people going to organize back in their districts to focus on the tiny number of human beings to make sure all this never happens again? The 535 members of Congress. You already have, people, about 30 percent of the Congress on your side to begin with! But without organized civic lobby groups back home, the corporations are moving relentlessly to become zero federal income tax payers. Already scores of corporations pay no federal income taxes year after year. This is an outrage and there is no defense against it once people organize against their two Senators and Representatives. -R

@WedgeLIVE Showing up for agenda setting is a big deal. The good caring departments heads who want to make a difference almost always fo it. Missing them sends a big message of not valuing the city council and throught that, diverse community needs and values.

With Barnette's failed confirmation we see the limitations of the "fuck you, who needs you?" strategy. This is why Frey is working so hard to eliminate confirmation votes for other city departments. He thinks this is how a mayor should operate.

@deenafaywinter I'm not even sure if that's legal. He nominated, they did not consent. The charter requires council consent. It says nothing about him being able to veto them when they do not consent. Do 5 votes to confirm mean consent from a group of 13? Can we hear from an impartial lawyer?

@Gebo___ There are transition plans already written. One accounts for a small increase in land filling while waste recovery ramps up. It also includes stronger regulations on waste. I think requiring all generators of waste to separate out organics & recylables is one step we van do ASAP.

I’m all for closing the HERC but there needs to be an alternative dump site first. We can’t just close down the HERC with no real plan for where to put the trash. 365,000 tons of trash needs to go somewhere.

Happening Now: residents begin hunger strike demanding Hennepin County Commissioners vote to close the HERC trash incinerator. “We have tried every channel available,” striker Natasha Villanueva said. “Now we escalate.”

@WedgeLIVE Even under the old charter this was a problem. I couldn't get an opinion on the new Viking Stadium funding proposal RT and the DFLers seemed to love so much from CA Segal and resorted to paying out of pocket to get one from a private attorney.
