Although I primarily work with pitchers these days, I still work with hitters occasionally. This post isn’t just about hitting but about holistic player development. This photo says it all 👇 I’ve worked with this hitter for the better part of 4 years. He’s currently leading Division 3 in HR with 8 through 13 games 🤯 He’s always had juice but the attack angle was too vertical and he had little adjustability out front. This winter we leaned into a couple of his motor preferences (horizontal + front extension leg). To do that, we had to get his body oriented back to the left. Partially because of his big counter with the upper half (natural and in preference) and the amount of swings he has accumulated over the years, his body had become so oriented to the right that he had run out of room to load and hold tension on the back side. This lead to either being stuck back or crashing forward, ruining his path and adjustability. Through some focused work both in and out of the cages, we got him back to the left and that’s when things got really fun. The horizontal feel starts in his setup, continues with his load, and ends with his finish. He’s able to get to his front side on time while still holding tension on the back side. The path flattened out, the decel pattern is cleaner, and adjustability out front is present. More flush contact, lower average launch angle, better spray angles, more hard contact on offspeed. This is less about what we did and more about how we used this player’s natural blueprint to problem solve. It’s not a math equation when it comes to developing players. Each athlete is complex and unique and requires unique and sometimes complex solutions. The more we understand this and lean into this as coaches, the more players we’ll be able to impact. This picture says it all: an intentional feel by the athlete that he came up with on his own. But it’s exactly what he needs. For right now. At some point, he’ll need something else and at that point we will adjust. For now, enjoy the video this photo was taken from of an absolute nuke 🚀 below this post 👇 @CURTISclayTRN @Cameron_Ginger @MotorPreference
