I was born in the early 70s to an immigrant girl living in rural Canada. She had fled the Netherlands post WWII due to the mass devastation in the wake of the German occupation. They had laid waste to the Netherlands and most of the dykes had been destroyed. Their once prosperous farmland covered in brackish water.
My mother's family was chosen to be part of a settlement push by Ontario to bring the Dutch farmers to farm the rich lands north of Toronto.
They joined a tight knit community, were welcomed and became active in the church. But in the 1970s it was still taboo in rural Ontario communities to be single and pregnant.
At 18 she had to choose, keep the baby and give up on her dreams of a career and shame her family? She could have an ab-rt-on and live with the knowledge that she k-lled her own child. Or she could give ME up for adoption.
You may not know my name, I'm not famous.
But if you've ever flown on an airplane that's under duress or if you used a cell phone to call 911 prior to 2001, your life may have been saved by technology I helped create.
Think about the person you are choosing to abort. You never know who that person might turn out to be. Or what their purpose was in life, if they're never given a chance.
