@ciaranmclav Certainly aligns with our data. Not many places for a reef shark to hide when the shelf drops off that steep. Saudi still holds some nice pockets of reef sharks in the main basin, but the GOA has unfortunately not fared well.

@Capn_Collin V interesting to see your study - I used to work in a dive centre in Aqaba (>1000 dives on the Jordanian reefs) and in all that time I saw 1 reef shark. Always assumed the Saudi coast would hold more sharks but maybe not!

@TrevorABranch I tried as a grad student. Journals wouldn’t allow it. They held off publishing until I gave them an affiliated email.

Advice to grad students: when you write a paper, use a gmail (or similar) for corresponding, instead of your institutional email, since institutional emails usually expire when you graduate. That way people interested in your paper can correspond with you.

Out in @NatureClimate : Following an intense upwelling event killing 81 species e.g., bull sharks and manta rays, we show increasing trends in upwelling frequency and intensity in SouthAfrica and easternAustralia and how movements of bull sharks are impacted!

This collaborative effort was led by @DrLucyHawkes @GarzonFrancesco @lynds_sea @MLBerumen @FindingAMcIvor @ReefEcologyLab @KAUST_News

Our findings are currently being used to inform the development of a spatial management plan for the surveyed area by @NEOM neom.com/en-us/nature
