We didn't report on this earlier because we were waiting for the full picture, and it looks like the story developed exactly as we suspected. Project Hail Mary author Andy Weir sat down with The Critical Drinker podcast and didn’t hold back on modern Star Trek. He praised Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks but called most of the recent Kurtzman-era shows "sh*t", celebrated the Starfleet Academy cancellation, and casually dropped that Paramount had rejected his own Trek pitch ("So, you know, f**k 'em"). The internet (and fellow writer Don Winslow) lit up. Winslow fired back publicly: "Congrats on the success of Project Hail Mary and The Martian… but when you have your moment, don’t use it to crap on other writers’ work. You owe Alex Kurtzman an apology". Weir responded today with a classy open letter on Facebook. He admitted the soundbites came off "disrespectful and mean", said he was trying (and failing) to be funny and self-deprecating, and stressed that he actually likes Kurtzman as a person. He even reiterated his love for the two shows he genuinely enjoyed. Sci-fi writers criticizing each other isn’t new, but seeing one of the biggest names in the genre admit his mistake so quickly? That’s so cool.

If that was his honest opinion then good on him, sadly if he had to do this because he’s in the public eye for his movie. It’s wrong and most likely that’s why he is taking it back. But we all know what he’s still thinking and good on him…. Sorry to the people oppressing his comments. Good on him for using his right for free speech

He was only saying his personal opinion which he has the right to do. If you think about it he’s probably only doing this because he’s a public figure in the spotlight at the moment and his comments might hurt his movie But if that is really what he’s thinking then good on him….

How it started for Andy Weir and how it's going. 😏 Look, everyone has a right to express an opinion. Even if they're feeling themselves a little bit and get into hot water. But stand by your shit and own it. To claim that UNEDITED exchanges were taken "out of context" is a cowardly cop out in an effort to brand save your ass...and brand save the movie that you wrote the source material for, but didn't write, direct or star in. Hopefully, a lesson learned for him. Again, no one disputes his right to express it. My issue is that he needs to stand by it and take the hits and not cop out with some lame "out of context" excuse.

#StarTrek is facing major criticism from Andy Weir after Starfleet Academy's cancellation, with Crime 101 writer Don Winslow weighing in: "Writers stand up for other writers. It's how and why the Writers Guild was formed. And you don't take your moment in the sun to attack another writer because they didn't buy your pitch." Read More: bit.ly/4s5Q0W5
