🇳🇱🇺🇦 Zelensky: Meeting with our servicemembers training on an Alkmaar-class mine countermeasure vessel in the Netherlands. The Netherlands will fully train the crew and will transfer the vessel to Ukraine as early as June. It will be named “Henichesk” in honor of our ship that was lost while carrying out a combat mission in June 2022 near the Kinburn Spit. This is already the fifth vessel in our future mine countermeasure fleet and the second provided specifically by the Netherlands.

The Netherlands will deliver an Alkmaar-class mine countermeasure vessel to Ukraine in June this year. The ship will be named “Henichesk” in honor of a Ukrainian vessel lost during a combat mission in 2022 near the Kinburn Spit. The Netherlands will also fully train and prepare the crew for its operation.

Every single American military grave in Belgium and the Netherlands has been adopted by a local family. There’s even a waiting list of hundreds of families who want one. After the Second World War, families in the villages near the American cemeteries began looking after the graves of the soldiers who had liberated them. They brought flowers, cleaned the headstones, and even tracked down the soldiers’ families back in the United States to let them know their sons were not forgotten. The practice spread quickly. Soon every grave was spoken for. Many families have been caring for the same grave for three generations now. At the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, over 8,000 graves and 1,700 names on the Wall of the Missing have all been adopted. The waiting list got so long they had to close it in 2021, with over 700 families still waiting. When a grave becomes available (usually 30 to 60 per year), it’s taken immediately. In Belgium, at Flanders Field American Cemetery, all 368 graves were adopted within just four months. At Henri-Chapelle, local families place red, white and blue flowers and rub sand from Normandy into the names so they stand out on the white marble. Many of the adopters have never even met the American families of the soldiers they care for. Some have. One Belgian couple opened a whole museum near the cemetery. Dutch and Belgian schoolchildren visit the graves as part of their education. Every Memorial Day, thousands of local families show up with fresh flowers for men they never knew, who died 80 years ago so they could be free.
