Major Tim Vakoc was a Roman Catholic priest from Robbinsdale, Minnesota — a quiet, determined man who had chosen orders before he chose the Army, and who believed, without hesitation, that the most dangerous places were exactly where he was supposed to be. He wrote to his sister from Iraq: "The safest place for me to be is in the center of God's will, and if that is in the line of fire, that is where I will be." As chaplain for the 44th Corps Support Battalion out of Fort Lewis, he was determined to celebrate Mass for soldiers no matter where they were — across an area the size of Connecticut, sometimes for only two or three soldiers in remote outposts. He went anyway. Every time. On May 29, 2004 — the twelfth anniversary of his ordination as a Roman Catholic priest, he was driving back to his unit after celebrating Sunday Mass for soldiers in the field when an IED detonated near his Humvee. The anniversary. Of all the days. The explosion took his left eye, paralyzed his left side, and left him with a traumatic brain injury. He was evacuated to Germany, then to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, then to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis. The man who had spent a year ministering to the wounded now became one of them. The structure of his life rebuilt itself slowly, around limitations he had never prepared for. But those who visited him at Walter Reed saw the same thing, again and again, soldiers who had served beside him, coming to sit with him. The pastoral care did not stop because the roles had reversed. If anything, it deepened. He was awarded the Bronze Star. The Purple Heart. The Combat Action Badge — honors that belong to fighters, given to a man whose only weapon had been faith. He died on June 20, 2009 — five years after the explosion — from a fall at his care facility in New Hope, Minnesota. He was 49 years old. 🕊️ He was the only U.S. military chaplain to die from wounds received in the Iraq War.
