Buffum Tool Company began around 1906, first with printing presses, then quickly expanding into a wide range of forged hand tools. Their catalog grew to include adjustable wrenches, alligator wrenches, chisels, punches, bearing scrapers, carbon scrapers, screwdrivers, and specialized tools for the rising automobile industry. What made their tools stand out wasn’t just the quality — it was the mark they stamped on them. Buffum tools were branded with the company name… and a swastika. In 1908 they filed for the trademark, and by 1909 it was officially registered. At the time, the swastika was still an ancient symbol of good fortune and well-being, used by many companies without any of the dark associations it would later carry. For Buffum, it was simply a bold, memorable logo meant to signal quality. Their tools showed up in industrial catalogs well into the 1930s, serving mechanics, machinists, and tradesmen across the country. Though the company eventually faded, the tools remain as solid reminders of a forgotten chapter in American manufacturing history.
