Brigham’s Gold Flake Cigarettes – Reading Football Players
An exceptionally scarce provincial cigarette card featuring J. Bradley, issued by Brigham & Coy. of Reading as part of their Reading Football Players series.
Bradley started his career as a Wing Half with Goldenhill Wanderers in 1897, before moving to Stoke City in 1898, Liverpool in 1905, Reading in 1911 and back to Stoke in 1913, and in 1915 full circle back to Goldenhill Wanderers.
Bradley played a full season for the Liverpool team who secured the First Division Championship in 1905-6, and with Reading the Southern League Division Two champions in 1914-5.
Issued with Brigham’s Gold Flake Cigarettes, these cards are among the rarest early English football cigarette issues. Surviving examples are seldom seen, and complete sets are virtually unknown.
A fascinating survivor from the pre-war English game, combining early professional football history with one of the most elusive regional cigarette card series.

1927 Roche & Co. – Famous Footballers
J. Galbraith – Clapton Orient
This Roche card features John McDonald “Jock” Galbraith (born 4 April 1898 in Renton, Scotland), a long-serving and dependable full-back for Clapton Orient during the 1920s.
Galbraith joined Orient in 1921 and became one of the club’s most consistent performers of the decade, making 277 Football League appearances and scoring 9 goals before leaving in 1931.
After a decade with Orient, he moved to Cardiff City (1931–1935), adding a further 143 league appearances and 2 goals to his career total. Following his playing days, Galbraith took his experience abroad, managing RC Lens in France, where he guided the club to the Ligue 2 championship in 1936–37.
The club was originally founded in 1881 as Glyn Cricket Club in the Hackney/Walthamstow area of London. In 1886 they changed their name to Eagle Cricket Club, and in 1888 became Orient Football Club - apparently named so as several of their players worked for the Orient Steam Navigation Company. In 1898 they renamed again as Clapton Orient and were one of London’s earliest Football League sides, joining in 1907.
Known for their working-class roots in the East End and a strong sense of community, the club also holds a unique place in football history for the large number of players who enlisted during WWI - 3 of whom tragically lost their lives during the struggle.
In later years, they evolved into the club we know today as Leyton Orient. (later back to Orient FC and the back to Leyton Orient once more)
Quite the history.

1890 J. Baines – Harry Daft
Notts County & Nottinghamshire
Harry Daft ( 1866–1940 ) was one of the great all-round sportsmen of the Victorian era — a rare figure who excelled in both football and first-class cricket at a time when professionalism was still taking shape.
On the football field, Daft was a key attacking player for Notts County, nicknamed "The Magpies" thanks to their early adoption of black-and-white colours. Daft played a major role in the club’s strong FA Cup campaigns of the late 1880s and early 1890s, contributing during the period that set up their 1894 success.
In cricket, Daft represented Nottinghamshire from 1885 to 1903, making over 200 first-class appearances and scoring more than 10,000 runs. A graceful left-hander, he was widely admired for his technique and calm temperament at the crease.
Harry was also part of the celebrated Daft sporting family — with brothers Richard, Charles, and Walter all prominent Nottinghamshire cricketers, and the Daft name becoming synonymous with elite Victorian sport in the county.
This 1890 J. Baines issue captures him during his peak as a dual-sport talent. Surviving examples from this series remain among the most charming early football cards, with their distinctive colours and unmistakable Baines artistry.
A wonderful window into 19th-century English sport and one of its finest multi-discipline figures.

1927 Roche Rising Sun Matches “Famous Footballers” – Alex Jackson (Huddersfield Town)
Alexander Skinner Jackson, born 12 May 1905 in Renton, Scotland, and remembered as one of the Wembley Wizards — the Scotland team that famously beat England 5–1 at Wembley in 1928, with Jackson scoring a hat-trick.
Jackson played as an outside right and had a distinguished club career:
1922–1924 – Dumbarton
1923–1924 – Bethlehem Steel (USA)
1924–1925 – Aberdeen
1925–1930 – Huddersfield Town (179 apps, 70 goals)
1930–1932 – Chelsea
1932–1933 – Ashton National
1933 – Margate
1933–1934 – OGC Nice
1934–1936 – Le Touquet
While at Huddersfield Town, Jackson was part of the team that won three consecutive First Division titles in 1923–24, 1924–25, and 1925–26 — a feat unmatched until decades later.
He earned 17 caps for Scotland, scoring 8 goals, and was nicknamed “The Gay Cavalier” for his flair and elegance on the pitch.
Off the field, he ran a pub in Covent Garden and wrote a newspaper column. Jackson served in WWII and tragically died in a traffic accident in Cairo, Egypt on 15 November 1946, aged just 41.

Johnny Holt of Everton shown on a Baines trade card, c.1891. I know not everyone is a fan of grading these cards, but now its ensconced in its slab its hopefully protected from getting damaged at any point in the future, plus its authenticity is verified.
Holt joined Everton in 1888, the very year organised League football began and Everton became one of the 12 founder members of the Football League.
Evertons opening match was versus Accrington and played at the clubs then home stadium of Anfield, in front of 12,000 supporters. George Fleming scored the opening goal and Evertons first ever goal in the Football League. The Accrington keeper, Johnny Horne, broke a rib early in the second half, and with the concept of substitutes not then in place, Accrington played the remainder of the match with 10 men, finally succumbing 2-1, and Everton taking the 2 points.
Holt went on to make over 200 appearances for the club between 1888–1898, winning the League title in 1890/91 and playing in the 1893 FA Cup Final.
He also represented England 10 times between 1890–1896. After leavin Everton in 1898 he moved to Reading where he remained for at least 2 years, after which the trail appears to go cold.
Interestingly the advertising to the rear refers to a Prize Jersey Competition and needing the "Complete Set of Twelve as shown on the Advert Bill" to be entered - I wonder if that refers to the 12 founding members of the league? Now to find the Advert Bill.

A very young George Best shown on a 1964 Barratt A.12 "Famous Footballers" Confectionery Card.
Just back from grading, I think PSA6 is about right -though doesn't make up for my PSA8 which is now residing on the other side of the pond. No doubt this guy will soon be making the same journey, but until he does I'll give him pride of place in my cabinet.
What would we all do to be able to travel back to 1964 and buy up all the sweet cigarette packs in the hope of finding a few of these beauties!! Time to start work on the time machine methinks!

Francis Carr Hudspeth of Newcastle United shown on a 1927 Roche Paraffin Matches "Famous Footballer" trade card.
Lovely little cards these - a simple photograph and name to the front, and a reverse that is really evocative of the era the cards were produced.
Carr was born in Percy Main, Tynemouth on 20 April 1890, and died Burnley, Lancashire on 5 February 1963.
His football career started with local junior sides in Scotswood, Newburn, Clare Vale and North Shields Athletic.
Newcastle came in for his signature in March 1910, for a £100 fee, and he remained with the club until 1929, making 472 appearances and scoring 37 goals (25 penalties). After Newcastle he moved to Stockport County and then Crook Town.
While at Newcastle he bagged 2 FA Cups (1920 & 1924) and a Football League Champions title in 1926-27 (as captain)
During World War Hudspeth served in the Royal Navy

These 'Cabinet' cards were issued by Godfrey Phillips with their Pinnace cigarette brand in the early 1920s. Scarce and beautiful, they measure 6x4 inches, and I'm lucky enough to own these showing #readingfc players.

1957 News Chronicle "Sporting Personalities" stamp showing John Charle . 12 stamps in the set.
No great value to them but thought I would put them in for grading for a bit of fun, solely on the basis you rarely see them (only the second set I have ever seen) and they are so fragile I thought it would be good to preserve them
The judging seems a bit harsh as they are what they say on the tin - perforated stamps with gum backs, printed on very thin paper. I'm not sure if they were issued as a complete sheet of 12 or were 1d per single stamp. I've only ever seen them as singles.
