Studies reveal that performing six 30 second sprints with adequate rest in between sets boosts human growth hormone (HGH) levels by up to 771%.
Sprinting is an anaerobic activity, meaning it requires energy faster than your body can deliver oxygen. This intense effort creates a significant metabolic stress that is a key factor in stimulating HGH release.
During a sprint, your muscles produce a large amount of lactate. Elevated blood lactate levels are strongly linked to a higher HGH response. Research has found that athletes who performed treadmill sprints had a higher blood lactate and a significantly greater HGH response compared to those doing endurance training.
Also, the explosive action of sprinting heavily engages the large muscle groups in your legs. The intent stimulation of these muscles generates a more powerful hormonal effect throughout the body.
While sprinting is an effective trigger, the HGH response can be affected by other factors such as:
1) Intensity: a higher intensity, such as near-maximal or all-out effort, leads to a greater HGH increase.
2) Rest intervals: The duration of rest between sprints is crucial. If the recovery period is too short, the HGH response may be blunted.
3) Overall health: Lifestyle factors like diet, sleep, and managing stress are critical for supporting HGH production.
This exercise-induced HGH surge works with a healthy lifestyle to support muscle-repair, fat metabolism and overall health.
