The last 2 weeks for Penn State is pretty hard to wrap your mind around. Taking off my analyst hat and putting on my former player one: Coach Franklin dedicated 12 years of his life to Penn State. He walked into a really tough situation with sanctions and turned this program into a perennial power among the top blue bloods in the country. Coach Franklin is one of the few people in this business who was truly in it for the impact he made on others. I was always amazed that I never even really played any significant snaps for Coach Franklin, but over the last 7 years of my life post playing career, he has always helped me with whatever I needed. He was one of the first people to call me when I left Arizona State. He was supportive and would always check in when I transferred to UMass. He’s helped me selflessly in my media career. He even called coaches (without me asking) to help me get my first GA job in coaching. He’s truly a selfless leader who cares more about others than himself. We all need to acknowledge that he brought a sense of community and stability to Penn State… and won a lot of big games. Our Penn State community should forever be appreciative AND I truly hope that when CJF has his first game back at Penn State or visits campus again, he gets the respect and massive standing ovation he deserves.
