Happy to announce our first paper of 2025, published in @NatureComms -- introducing wearable technologies for measuring flow through vascular access (VA) devices, such as those used in hemodialysis with patients who suffer from chronic kidney disease. The operating principles are related to those associated with devices that are under commercial development by @rhaeos for tracking flow of cerebrospinal fluid through shunts used to treat individuals with hydrocephalus.  Adapted use of this technology with VA devices, as described and demonstrated here, opens up a range of additional possibilities in patient monitoring. Particular thanks to Yujun Deng (now a faculty member at Shanghai Jiao Tong University @sjtu1896), @CarliniChemPD (now a faculty member at @ucsantabarbara) and Hany Arafa (now at Apple) for their leadership on this project, and to senior collaborators Prof. Yonggang Huang (@NorthwesternU) and Prof. @rahmioklu (@MayoClinic) for their theoretical and clinical contributions, respectively. Great way to kick off the new year! nature.com/articles/s4146…

@stephenacton7 @MarioNawfal Joke’s on you. We don’t go grey either, instead experiencing achromotrichia. Rough time to joke about those who never lose their powers.

🚨STUDY: REDHEADS AREN'T JUST RARE — THEY'RE WIRED DIFFERENTLY Oxford scientists confirm what 2% of the population already knew: redheads are built different. Their MC1R gene doesn't just give them striking looks — it rewires their entire sensory system. From higher pain tolerance to heightened pleasure sensitivity, the "ginger gene" is nature's performance enhancer. They handle 25% more pain than others, and report a 41% higher rate of... satisfaction. Maybe blondes don't have more fun after all. Source: NY Post

In the 1990s, Herbert Hui invited me to give a seminar at Cornell. “Let me introduce you to an interesting character,” Herbert said. ⁦I met @stevenstrogatz⁩. “Here is a gift for you,” Steve said. The book has given me many hours of pleasure of reading and illumination.
