In a shocking and heartbreaking development, Haitian-American Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was shot and killed on Wednesday in what authorities are investigating as a domestic violence incident, according to the Coral Springs Police Department. Police responded to reports of multiple gunshots at a residence in the city. Metayer Bowen, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, Stephen Bowen, has been named a suspect and is now in police custody. He initially fled the scene and was apprehended in Plantation. “The Coral Springs Police Department is currently working a death investigation involving the City of Coral Springs Vice Mayor, Nancy Metayer Bowen. It is still an active investigation,” said Coral Springs Police Sgt. Francis Capre. Metayer Bowen was a trailblazing public servant and community advocate. A first-generation American and environmental scientist by training, she rose from educator to become the first Black and Haitian American woman elected to the Coral Springs City Commission in 2020. She won re-election unopposed in 2024 and served as Vice Mayor. During her tenure, she contributed to key initiatives, including the city’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee and the Charter School Advisory Board. She was widely respected for her dedication to affordable housing, education, environmental issues, and representing the diverse voices of her community. Just months earlier, the community rallied around Metayer Bowen and her family following the tragic suicide of her younger brother, Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer, a survivor of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in nearby Parkland. Donovan, 26, had battled schizophrenia for years in the aftermath of the trauma. She had publicly advocated for improved mental health resources. Nancy was not only a friend but also a strong supporter of L'Union Suite. We have stood with her and supported her work since her very first campaign. She was always just one call away, ready to help, listen, or show up for our community. She leaves behind a legacy of trailblazing service & community commitment. She was far more than a colleague; she was true family.
