The ROC (Taiwan) Air Force is finally retiring its last F-5Fs this week, ending 61 years of F-5 operations that started when they received their first F-5As through the Military Assistance Program (MAP) in 1964. Of all the world's F-5 operators, the ROCAF stands out for a few reasons: 1.) The obvious- how long they've continually operated them in various forms- and it's also wild to think about how they'd probably still have them in front-line service today if Carter had authorized the sale of F-5G/F-20s 2.) AIDC license-produced them domestically in Taiwan, there were several nations (including Canada and Switzerland) that technically license-built F-5s, but in reality they assembled them a la IKEA furniture in crates from Northrop. Korea and Taiwan were the only operators that actually built the airplanes domestically- they didn't have USAF serial numbers or anything like that. 3.) At one point they were the largest F-5 operator in the world, with 308 aircraft equipping fifteen squadrons. [1/?]
