The 2025 MBRRACE-UK Saving Lives Improving Mothers' Care report makes key recommendations to bridge the gaps in care for women with medical and social challenges

The MBRRACE-UK report also looks at the care of women who died in the year after the end of pregnancy in the UK and Ireland. 583 (91%) of the 643 women who died during pregnancy or up to a year after the end of pregnancy in 2021-2023 faced multiple interrelated challenges

Women living in the 20% most deprived areas had an almost two-fold higher maternal mortality rate than women living in the least deprived 20% of areas.

Disparities continue between women from different ethnic groups. In 2021-23 the maternal mortality rate for White women was 12.4 per 100,000 women giving birth, compared to 16.7 per 100,000 for women from Asian ethnic groups and 28.2 per 100,000 for women from Black ethnic groups

257 women died in the UK during pregnancy or up to six weeks after the end of pregnancy in 2021-2023 from causes related to or aggravated by pregnancy among 2,004,184 women giving birth, a maternal mortality rate of 12.82 per 100,000 buff.ly/l870GUB
