Could an Emanuel Steward/Mike Tyson link up have been a success? Late one night in Vegas, Mike decided he wanted to get something to eat. We pulled into Piero's (featured in the movie Casino). The restaurant was closed and so was the kitchen but they said they would of course accommodate the champ any way they could. Much to our surprise, there was one other party at the bar and it was none other than Emanuel Steward holding court. "Chief!" I got his attention. Emanuel smiled from ear to ear and came over and hugged Mike and myself and we began talking about amateur boxing from back in the days like the Ohio State Fair. That following week I was back in Detroit and Emanuel called me. "Big John!" He said with excitement. "Man, we gotta get Mike back in the ring for one more fight." By this time it had been more than a year since his loss to Kevin McBride and a return to the ring was the furthest thing on Mike's mind. Emanuel went into his pitch. "Mike wearing the KRONK Gold trunks, white boxing shoes (Emanuel could not stand black boxing shoes) not those heavy back boots, bouncing on his toes. Jabbing, boxing..." At that point I had to pull the car over because he was so into his pitch I was actually visualizing this. Then reality hit me like a Mike left hook. "Okay Emanuel, let me talk to Mike and see what he thinks." I never mentioned it to Mike, or anyone for that matter until years later. What Emanuel and literally no one else but Mike's inner circle knew at the time, was that Mike was beginning serious treatment taking on his toughest opponent to date, addiction. Later it was no secret and Mike made one of the greatest comebacks in the sports history, outside the ring. But I still cant help but wonder, what Mike making one last comeback fight in the KRONK Gold might have looked like! John Lepak, KRONK
