Wes Streeting’s position today looks far weaker than it did yesterday. What we are witnessing is not authority, but overreach. In attempting to move outside the proper process, he has exposed himself to criticism from all sides. John McDonnell’s intervention feels less like a random attack and more like a calculated reminder that Streeting does not command the numbers. The left have taken their moment, and they are pressing it. More telling, however, is the question of loyalty. Keir Starmer entrusted Streeting with one of the most demanding roles in government, overseeing the vast machinery of the National Health Service. It is a position that requires discipline, judgement, and above all, alignment with the leadership. If Streeting has chosen to test that boundary, he has done so without the necessary backing. That is a dangerous place to stand in Westminster. What follows will be decisive. Without support, there is no path to challenge. Only pressure, scrutiny, and the quiet closing of ranks around the Prime Minister. If anything, this looks less like a leadership move and more like a miscalculation that others are now exploiting.

Just a thought. Wes Streeting owes his political status to the support he’s received over years from Peter Mandelson & Morgan McSweeney at Labour Together. He wouldn’t make a move against Keir Starmer without Mandelson’s say so. So look on this as Mandelson’s & Morgan’s revenge.

🚨 NEW: Keir Starmer invited all Ministers into his office tonight to tell them that for the sake of the country, "Wes can't win" One Minister said: “There was something in his eyes I haven't seen before. And I liked it" [@JackElsom]

@PolitlcsUK @JackElsom I’m not totally against him as he is a good communicator and highly combative against Tory shithousery bullshit but it’s selfishness from @wesstreeting. He has always wanted the job. Wes wants to be PM for Wes. Keir wants to be PM for his voters and the wider country. #NoToMayhem

Things can change in politics. If the economy starts doing better in a year or so’s time and people have more money in their pocket, Labour can win the 2029 General Election. But Starmer needs a chance. 2 years is not enough time.

@KateEMcCann I don’t think that everybody considered Kemi Badenoch to be delivering “truths” - Emily’s frustration was surely more that she was being forced to listen to lies?

Labour MPs looking utterly miserable listening to Kemi Badenoch in the Commons. Emily Thornberry brave enough to step in and try to knock her off course but you could see as Thornberry sat back down the pure fury and frustration of someone forced to listen to uncomfortable truths

What a great speech Starmer is making and brilliant the way he took the Micky out of Badenoch for what was an appalling rant of insults with no substance. He truly is a great PM and leader and the Kings Speech has confirmed it today as Labour get on with clearing up the Tory mess

Labour has already passed 50 new laws to tackle the cost of living, empower local communities and get a better deal for working people. In today’s King’s Speech we’re going further, with action on energy bills, national security, and making public services fit for the future.

Good to hear Sir Keir Starmer raise SEN during the King’s Speech debate. It is an issue far too often marginalised in national politics.

@GoodwinMJ Deficit down £20bn under Labour (£132bn vs prior year). More people in work — 34.33 million employed. Unemployment falling to 4.9%. Yields are high — fair challenge — but the economy isn't 'destroyed'. Cherry-picking one metric doesn't change
