Playoff hockey can be so dumb. Outshot 29-9, score twice - on a deflection on a shot that was going ten feet wide and then bouncing one off Vasy back from behind the goal. But... Montreal was the better team for large parts of the series.
I'll have a succinct set of thoughts on the Tampa Bay Lightning season tomorrow.
For now:
- Game 7
- Kucherov complaints
- Depth scoring won series for MTL
- Questions are fair surrounding Point/Hedman
- 2026-27 roster is kinda set
- Still think this is a damn good hockey team
@CarterChase5@the_habitant Hutson Dobson Demidov slaf cole nick are the 6 id consider the core. They still need a 2c and a 2nd pair rd but they might have them in waiting with hage and reinbacher time will tell
Habs aren’t even in their winning window yet, we’re overachieving WAY ahead of schedule
Congrats though on your achievement - I’m glad you can celebrate beating a good Tampa team one time during your “core 4s” window!
@CarterChase5@Laf4MVP_ It really doesn’t there was nothing remotely close to the nhl standard .. there was no regular season in the first one lol or fans .. second one no fans and made up divisions and you only played in your div all year .. not real hockey not even close
Nikita Kucherov is an all world player, one of the best I’ve seen.
But Leon Draisaitl, to me, is still the consensus third best player in the league.
Kucherov’s playoff shortcomings the last 3 seasons are more worthy; while Draisaitl elevates his game at historic rates.
Do you agree, or am I being too harsh?
@TopTierPucks 9 straight playoffs which is tied for league lead and a franchise who has a former Cup winning player coaching the winningest franchise in NHL history and whose coach is team Canada coach. Can’t talk hockey without talking Bolts.
Lowkey Tampa hasn’t gotten nearly enough hate for 4 straight first round exits. The covid cups are great and everything but it’s time to start putting them on perennial fraud watch
@ByTimReynolds Florida is still trailing TB in all-time head-to-head and has fewer Cups yet their fans can only talk trash tonight because Lightning had a game and Panthers didn’t. Your inferiority complex is showing.
@CarterChase5@Laf4MVP_ Not saying they weren’t fun .. just not nhl playoffs .. one was 4 months after the season ended in one building with no fans .. next was a shortened season against the same 8 teams over and over and still no fans
@nascarfanbw23@the_habitant Yeah, so team has old guys that aren’t even part of core. Who is new core? I’ll give you Dobes, Hutson and Demidov but you know and I know that if the rest is Caulfield and Suzuki, that’s not good enough. Need to reload around the first three names but I don’t trust they will.
@erekzoolander@Laf4MVP_ Nahh, just every franchise played and took an L and couldn’t handle playing in empty arenas with separation from families. Bolts found a way though and it’s their names on the Cup and the boat parades were fun so those are Ws in my book
@25_futurhabs@valleeGa@ECloskyWTSP Enjoy playing games in mid May thanks to a Bolts all-timer…smart that your organization knows where to go to find a difference maker.
Brandon Hagel and Jon Cooper both said this feeling is very similar to the one they had in Milan. Hagel didn't really know how to explain this loss after the contest.
"You give up 0 shots in the 2nd period. Three shots in the 3rd period. And lose a hockey game."
@cbsguy63@valleeGa@ECloskyWTSP I’m not blaming them for 9 shots and winning, I’m saying that’s not good enough to beat Buffalo. When has Cooper ever disrespected Habs fans?
@CarterChase5@valleeGa@ECloskyWTSP Someone is sour…blaming Montreal for having only 9 shots and winning , take a look at your fraud team…karma…Cooper won’t be disrespecting Habs fans anytime soon….
@CarterChase5@stevecarney Nailed it. They threw away a couple games because of Cooper’s decision making and failure to have them properly prepared. And then he makes excuses for them. He has made them soft. Go listen to what Suzuki had to say about Marty firing up Montreal in the second intermission.
The question for #TBLightning fans has to be, “What do you need to see changed?” Because as much talent as this team has, getting bounced in the first round of the playoffs, even in seven games where each game was decided by one goal, is unacceptable.
The Tampa Bay Lightning behaved like absolute losers for the entire series. Taunting, gloating, showboating, and dirty garbage after the whistle. Karma could not possibly feel better. What an unlikable team.
First Olympics. Now Game 7. Jon Cooper has been on the wrong end of two brutal losses this year.
For the 4th straight season, the Bolts are bounced in first round. Lose Game 7 with only 9 MTL shots on net.
Incredible series. 3rd time ever all seven games decided by one goal.
@valleeGa@ECloskyWTSP Bolts gave away games 1 and 5 and MTL rightly won tonight - have to create luck and they did and Dobes was best player in the series. I’ll enjoy the Cup with Kucherov’s name on it twice.
@CarterChase5@ECloskyWTSP Well you guys stoled game 2 and 4. We stoled game 7. Habs deserved the series. Anyway enjoy cancun and your russian regular season merchant
Here are my three takeaways from Montreal’s 2-1 Game 7 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, brought to you by Snap Bar Sportif in Rigaud.
1- Captain clutch
Nick Suzuki delivered when it mattered most, Game 7. The Canadiens captain had been held off the scoresheet at 5-on-5, and it was one of the biggest talking points heading into the final game of the series. But as mentioned before, if you give star players enough time, they eventually deliver and Suzuki did just that.
The first goal of any game is massive, and even more so in a tight Game 7. After the way Andrei Vasilevskiy played in Game 6, it looked like it might be nearly impossible to beat him clean. Kaiden Guhle got a shot through that Suzuki expertly deflected, and it caught a bounce off J.J. Moser’s shin pad on the way in.
It doesn’t matter how it goes in. We saw plenty of examples over the last two games of pucks that somehow stayed out. Nobody is going to remember Suzuki’s quiet stretch earlier in the series after scoring a goal like that in an elimination game.
2- Simply Dobes
There’s no way to sugarcoat it, the Canadiens stole Game 7. A big reason why was Jakub Dobes. He was Montreal’s best player, and they needed him to be.
The only goal he allowed was a perfect deflection on the power play by Dominic James. Outside of that, he was outstanding. The ice was tilted in the second period, with Tampa controlling play while Montreal failed to register a single shot on goal. During that stretch, it felt like Dobes made save after save just to keep them alive.
One of the biggest questions coming into the series was whether Dobes could match a future Hall of Famer like Vasilevskiy. In this game, he absolutely did.
Montreal also got a few breaks. Alex Newhook banked in the game-winner off Vasilevskiy’s pants, and there were a couple of icings that didn’t go the full length of the ice one hitting a broken stick, another stopping inexplicably. Sometimes, that’s what it takes.
3- Montreal beat a great team and neutralized great players
Maybe they were a little fortunate to win Game 7 on the road, but Montreal earned their spot in Round 2. With this playoff format, a very good team was going home, and it ended up being Tampa Bay.
While Montreal’s top players took some criticism for their production, they did an equally strong job shutting down Tampa’s stars. Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point were held to one goal each, and Anthony Cirelli didn't score and had only two points. More importantly, they were quiet in Game 7.
Meanwhile, Suzuki was on the ice for both Montreal goals, both at even strength. That’s the difference.
Hockey fans got a terrific series between two evenly matched teams. Every game was decided by one goal, with constant swings in momentum and emotion.
Now we’ll see what Montreal has in store for Round 2 against the Buffalo Sabres… but that was awesome.
