It has been raining for a couple days in Djerba, Tunisia 🇹🇳⛈️

What may seem like simple rural clothing to some actually carries echoes of a great Carthaginian history.

🇹🇳 This painting portrays a Tunisian woman named “Alia,” also known as “Vieille Bédouine” (Old Bedouin Woman), by the Russian Orientalist painter Alexander Roubtzoff.

The painting was sold at a public auction in Portugal for €90,000—about 300,000 Tunisian dinars—making it one of Roubtzoff’s most valuable pieces. Its rich, meticulous details reflect the deep-rooted heritage of this land.

Roubtzoff, who lived from January 24, 1884 to November 26, 1949, spent most of his life in Tunisia, where he created many works inspired by the country and its people.
