Kids pick Pokémon over Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest for the same reasons I picked Pokémon as a kid.
Final Fantasy is too mature. Dragon Quest is too niche. I wasn’t a fan of either. But Pokémon is absolutely designed to appeal kids. Always has been.
