If your youth wrestling coach is cursing at your athletes, you need to find a new room. I just spent a few days at Oklahoma State, one of the most talented rooms in college wrestling. I didn’t hear a single curse word delivered by leadership during practice. The best coaches in the country, coaching the best athletes in the country — with the most on the line. Now ask yourself, if the best coaches aren’t using that type of language with 20-year-olds, does it make sense to use it when addressing your 10-year-old sons and daughters? Negative energy is contagious, and so is the language. It’s tough to build someone up while belittling them at the same time. If you want your kids to be empowered, allow them to be led by coaches in control of their own emotions. Treat your wrestlers with dignity, and you get the most from them. Trouble brewing in Iowa City? Looks like not everyone is on board with the “big bag offers” to these single semester grad students. Some of the loyal room guys (Glazier, Cobe, Hill, Riggins) who lost a spot or didn’t like the approach are leaving and others who started their journey there and who are accomplished are asking “wait, where’s my money?”… Turns out they don’t wanna pay up the AA’s they already have, but more than willing to splurge on open market. Toes have been stepped on and it seems like it wasn’t handled properly. One of the soon-to-be-transfers families asked if Teemer was coming, Brands acted like he had no idea what they were talking about- then less than a month later he was working out in their room and staying in IC… This doesn’t bode well for recruiting or team morale. Is all this trouble worth 2nd place? 🤨
