This is not a games of Chicken. If you analyze 2027 Cap, the Bengals will have 43 players under contract (assuming this and next year's draftees make the roster and picking up Rehkow's RFA contract) but only about $25-26mm of Cap for the remaining 10 players needed and the practice squad. Amoungst those 10 players signed or resigned is Turner, Hill and Battle. The 3 of them will cost $45-60mm AAV together. Had they picked up Murphy, that $14.5mm would have been committed and only $10mm left to deal with 9 players, including those three important cogs.

Classic "Heads I win, tails you lose" nonsense from Schefter. If the Bengals don't take the swing for Lawrence, the narrative is, "What does Burrow think about the lack of aggression", and when they do take the swing, it turns into, "If the results don't follow, will Burrow be happy?" Schefter needs to stick to copying and pasting agent texts on personnel matters/transactions and save the tired narratives masquerading as analysis.
