Book cover illustration: The Dance of Death in Painting and in Print. Author: Thomas Tindall Wildridge, 1887. Currently in the digital collection of the Wellcome Library / Internet Archive. This figure's call wasn't a sound, but a rhythm; each beat of the drum served as an invisible step, drawing the living toward their inevitable end. Whoever you were in life - priest or beggar, noble or peasant - that rhythm would find you, too. Originating during the plague years of the Middle Ages, this belief lived on in the visual arts for centuries: from the first known danse macabre fresco, painted on the walls of the Cemetery of the Innocents in Paris in 1424-25, music was always one of the figure's core elements. When Wildridge published this book in 1887, the danse macabre tradition was experiencing a powerful resurgence in European culture.
