@smiley_moth @constans It’s long been a favorite critique of commentators that UK society and specifically the values of the British elite do not value science and engineering, instead prioritizing putting their best students into law and finance, and the idea is that has stunted UK economic growth.

The tough position to be in is people raised upper middle class, attended a good college, & took a “prestige” media/arts/policy job but whose parents werent rich enough to give them a trust fund or at least pay their rent. They got ahead of what their social class can sustain!

This is why I don’t even bother with insurance. I pay out of pocket for my primary cares “insurance” program, I use GoodRx/Trump Rx for my scripts, and if I ever got really injured or needed care they would have to treat me, and if the bill was ridiculous I would tell them to fuck off, wait for a settlement offer, and let my credit get ruined. You can build it back up, it’s not hard it just takes a while. Would you let your credit score take a hit for 7 years for 10s or hundreds of thousands of dollars? @TheMekon_Venus Phone pricing played a role. In the US local calls were generally free. Not so in the UK. Free local calls enabled BBS systems to be established in the US, but were much rarer in the UK.

Part of why I am so torn between the Northeast and the Southwest is that they are total antipodes. One is wet, geriatric, overtaxed, 'heavy', dark -- the other is dry, young, low-tax, 'light', sunny. And frankly, I've got a massive pile of savings. A once-in-a-lifetime pile of cash I've worked years to build. We're on our first baby, and I know that if and when the second baby comes, we'll really be in for it. I know that inflation is gonna eat at this pile of cash. I've got the freedom to choose here. Stay in the Adirondacks, move down to the Mohawk Valley of NY, or pull up the stakes completely and go to West TX / NM / AZ (where America's future really lives). But I've got one shot. One choice. Once I make the choice, it's over, I've gone and done it. The future of my family hinges on the choice I make. There are no take-backs. I know that once baby #2 comes, we're likely to stay wherever we're at. So it's a "hot" moment in my life. Gotta make a choice. Gotta pray about it. Heart says go Southwest, to the future, to youth, to warmth -- brain says stay here, with the past, with the elderly, in freezing temps. Lord help me.
