How come our son Alan can retire? What are we doing wrong?I’m twice his age, still seeing the sunrise every morning (if its not raining). Proud & happy he has managed to stay in one piece though.

Taken from Budget 2024, this table shows the Government is projecting to take nearly £2bn out of British food production and the rural economy during the course of this Parliament.
Surely this was worth a mention in the Labour manifesto?

@MrLloydJames The more highly geared the farming business is, the less inheritance tax it will pay? Make sure you’ve done your sums though. Risky!
Alternatively farm like you’ll live forever and make sure you do live forever. Not so risky, but more difficult to achieve…

I suspect the protests will achieve nothing & we all need to take time and a breath to work out how to deal with this new landscape.
Don’t make a knee jerk decision, take advice, think about it, take time and then act. It’s going to be hard for many, not the few.

I agree, I’m yet to be convinced that the changes in APR will lead to significant falls in land value.
In our area, Wales, the volume and value of land sales that has been driven by non farming purchases is limited.

A point I’ve seen made a lot in the last few weeks is that Agricultural Property Relief on Inheritance Tax artificially inflates land prices, and so farmers should in fact support the government’s policy because it will bring them down… is this right? A thread….🧵 /1

Defra say imported food with minor paperwork errors should be let through customs to avoid delays.
