@RomanP11 @politicalmath The law in NYC is that it's basically impossible to kick out a non-paying tenant. Unless he's proposing to radically change tenant law in the city, that's what you're signing up for if you're foolish enough to fall for his proposal.

Dear citizens of NYC: DO NOT DO THIS
GIF
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor

If you own a home with a basement, attic, or backyard, chances are you’ve thought about using it to earn a little extra income or as space for a loved one. We want to make it as easy (and affordable) as possible for you to do that. NYC recently legalized ADUs — but for too many New Yorkers, they’re still tied up in bureaucracy and expense. We're fixing that. Our new toolkit at nyc.gov/aduforyou includes preapproved building plans and a financing calculator so you can get right to building. If we want New York to remain a city for everyone, we have to make it easier for homeowners to stay here. ADU for You will do just that.

@RomanP11 @politicalmath They *should* allow new housing. However, not letting you kick out a non-paying tenant rounds to "not allowing new housing", even if in theory you'd permit a new housing unit. If you're dumb enough to build a new unit where you have to house somebody for free, that's the trap.

@OXHarryH1 @MuseZack To keep it on topic: including this contract, BTW. Unless you find a clause that indicates otherwise, the only inflation adjustment is for AC. Hard for me to imagine that's driving a 2.5x increase.

Rufo as is his habit has buried a fair critique—The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife crossing is behind schedule & way more expensive than it should be—with a lot of unfair ones. Wildlife crossings are widely accepted, uncontroversial and built all over the world.

EXCLUSIVE: Gavin Newsom promised to build a bridge for cougars and butterflies in the middle of Los Angeles. The project has turned into another boondoggle, with broken deadlines and costs exploding to $114 million. This is Newsom's bridge to nowhere. city-journal.org/article/califo…

@OXHarryH1 @MuseZack Inflation clauses are not typical in construction/civil works contracts, hence my pointing out that CALTRANS only appears to cover pavement. I’ve linked this exact contract above. If you think it has one, over the standard specs for HMA, feel free to quote it.

@OXHarryH1 @MuseZack Barring a contract clause to the contrary, it absolutely is. AFAICT, only pavement is included in the CALTRANS standard specs from 2022 I don't see anything in the project specs that would override that, but feel free to point it out if you find something different.

@OXHarryH1 @MuseZack But here, they've put it out at that $27mm (awarded at $22mm) then had that cost explode. I assume this is happening everywhere, and that's what's adding up to the $114mm. But I can't find easy data for stuff than the construction contract.

@OXHarryH1 @MuseZack If they were still in the process of designing it and preparing to put it out for bid, and then said, "Y'know, we originally thought this bridge was going to be $15mm, but once we have a final design we expect bids to be $27mm", Well, that's not *good*, but I *understand* that.

@OXHarryH1 @MuseZack ...was way off by 250%. That's well outside of, "Well, we're still trying to figure things out." That should have been worked out in the design phase. Y'know, before award.

@OXHarryH1 @MuseZack I can very well believe that a contract will have some small errors, changes, etc. God knows every contract I've had the contractor point to a sheet and ask, "Precisely what were you thinking here?" But they should have had something pretty close, and it turns out it still...

@OXHarryH1 @MuseZack (NB: this isn't the original all-in cost, just a portion of the work that's easy for me to find) The original CALTRANS bridge construction contract was bid at $22,719,732, and with change orders is now $56,606,840. So the biggest contract has grown by 250% ...1/2
