Justice Seamus Woulfe said that previous case law which stated that the family referred to in Article 41 is one based on marriage is wrong and that subsequent case law accepting it should be overruled. Article 41 forms part of the upcoming referendum.

The coffin carrying the body of Pte Sean Rooney was carried into the Holy Family Church in Dundalk by his family and members of the Defence Forces. The Irish tricolour and a UN flag are draped over his coffin.
