William Wyler's biblical epic BEN-HUR (1959) was the most expensive film ever made and the most successful in Academy Awards history. It set the record for the most Oscars won with 11 (later tied by TITANIC and RETURN OF THE KING), including Best Actor for star Charlton Heston.

Nobel prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter received his first of 2 Oscar nominations for adapting John Fowles' romantic novel THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT'S WOMAN. The film's 5 nods included one for Meryl Streep: her 1st of 17 in the Best Actress category and 3rd of 21 total. #Oscars

Based on the 1975 historical novel by E. L. Doctorow, RAGTIME received 8 Oscar nominations, including Adapted Screenplay (Weller) and 2 for acting (Rollins Jr, McGovern). The film ended up winless and is tied-2nd for the most noms ever among movies not nominated for Best Picture.

Jane Fonda bought the rights to Ernest Thompson's play ON GOLDEN POND with her father in mind for the lead role. The film received 10 Oscar nominations, winning both Best Actor (Henry Fonda) and Best Actress (Katharine Hepburn). It also claimed the Best Adapted Screenplay prize.
