This week I presented a webinar to parents at Admiral discussing the co-morbidity of neurodiversity & mental health issues in children and young people. It comes as no surprise that research confirms that having an ADHD personality was strongly linked to anxiety and depression . Austism is also strongly correlated with anxiety as well as dyspraxia/DCD. The inability to regulate emotions effectively, trauma from sensory overload to together with a higher probability of bullying doesn’t portray a happy picture of life coping with neurodiverse traits. More needs to be done to support children and their families. As someone who gained their official diagnosis at 54 of Dyspraxia and ADHD it comes as no surprise that neurodivergent children struggle at school both socially and academically. Very few educators are tooled with the necessary strategies to support such learners. This leads to chronically low self esteem and much under achievement in comparison to their neurotypical peers who intellectually are their equal. Until we are able to get children diagnosed early and appropriate training for all in place this will continue. #mentalhealth #training #neurodiversity #anxiety #depression #dyspraxia #adhd #autism #education
