My statement on Canada-U.S. trade:

I sat down with leaders from Canada’s steel industry to make clear our government will do whatever it takes to protect steel jobs in Ontario. The future of Canada will be made by Canadian steel and Canadian steel makers.

What 🇨🇦 now has to deal with is the impending diversion of unfairly priced foreign imports. It will happen. Regrettably, our trade remedy laws are not the most effective or efficient vehicle for countering this looming threat. @Catherine_CSPA @CdnChamberofCom @cme_mec

In a meeting with Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Minister Hon. @VictorFedeli and the Canadian Steel Producers Association @CSPA_ACPA we discussed Ontario’s steel industry, global sector trends, and competitive challenges. Ontario is the steel hub of the country accounting for over 70% of Canada’s steelmaking capacity. Our government is committed to working with steel industry to help improve its global competitiveness.

We will always stand up for Canadian workers. That’s why we’re implementing tariffs on imported Chinese EVs, and steel & aluminum products. These measures are designed to protect workers & industry from unfair practices, ensuring that the interests of Canadian workers come first.

It’s a no-brainer that 🇨🇦has to follow through with steep surcharges on Chinese EVs -as well as on steel & aluminum. Actions to be coordinated w US & Mex as 3 counties work together under CUSMA. A no-brainer.@FlavioVolpe1 @Catherine_CSPA globe2go.pressreader.com/article/281913…

I comment in this piece👇 that the federal govt can respond immediately to influx of Chinese steel/aluminum by using statutory authority to impose tariff surcharges and that 🇨🇦 shd coordinate w 🇺🇸 to combat unfair Chinese trade. @CSPA_ACPA theglobeandmail.com/politics/artic…
