I remain cautiously optimistic about Leo. His rhetoric has been much more oppositional than I anticipated and I’m glad that the first North American pope (and the second American pope) is so vocally hostile toward the reactionary forms of Catholicism that feel hegemonic in the US

It's why Hart's universalism book becomes more interesting when read as figuring the dramatic struggle between a post-2008 revitalized socdem progressive politics and the insurrectionary white proprietor capitalist imaginary, both of which seek to flatten difference

It's bewildering to me how nobody realizes that DBH is an abjectly conservative theologian, and how his white universalism isn't a bug but a feature of this. I guess it's the same as when people got surprised that Barron "suddenly became" a fascist (he has always been one).

Any theological universalist must seriously engage with the arguments emergent from the postcolonial traditions that challenge any notion of difference or particularity reducible to the whole without remainder. Otherwise they risk reifying the very problem they seek to overcome
