Great advice on how to talk to our Ss about the learning process so that they can put useful strategies to work for them.

New teachers often try covering a new standard each lesson and moving on. This isn’t how the mind acquires information best. Students need spaced repetition and progressive deepening. This requires a “track design” in which old topics are brought back and recombined with the new.

"Including explicit SEL instruction in your classroom doesn’t require a big, drastic change. ... Small investments in SEL instruction will lead to big changes in our students, the classroom community and ourselves." More here, via @caselorg: casel.org/blog/5-meaning… #SELChat

New study on Math anxiety which shows how complex the factors are in terms of establishing the cause of it. Interestingly, one thing that is not mentioned here at all is the idea that tests cause anxiety. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Kids who can’t juggle as many elements in working memory benefit from being able to retrieve elements from long term memory. Instead of denying struggling learners memorization strategies - labeling them “slow processors” - we should actually be leaning into them more.

How can we build knowledge through read-alouds? Ex. of ❓ teachers can ask about 📚to ⬆️ knowledge: -What new info have you learned from this page? -How does that connect to what we learned yesterday? -What does the author say about that? How do you know? knowledgematterscampaign.org/post/for-stron…

🚨The headlines tell you education is a dumpster fire, with burned out teachers and hapless admin and rancorous school boards. 👀 Step into a classroom and see magic happen. It's hard some days, but this is the greatest job ever. Our DNA is stamped with "make learning epic."

@laurenTarshis the Ss in 2J are LOVING our 1st I Survived read aloud! They are in awe of your ability to end every chapter with a cliffhanger that has them begging for one more chapter! Thank you!

@theVogelman @PsyDocCindy Beginning this work with the most critical/common gaps has made this more manageable in my classes. Over time, I’ve learned what needs to be added in the core instruction and pre-teaching is most helpful.

@PsyDocCindy What about curating a set of articles, infographics, and YouTube instructional videos that support foundational knowledge? I created a “Grammar Bonsai” series of tutorials for my English students and a Video of the Week curation for AP w notetaking assigned.

How do K-12 educators deal with the differences in prior knowledge in their students to try and create equitable learning experiences? I want to learn from you.

@alisonstoneBIO I haven’t stopped thinking about the idea that critical thinking depends on having something to think with. I see it in every thing we do. Knowledge-building is foundational.

@tetheredtoed1 @KeldenFormosa I use the free version, but there is a paid version with more options. Agree the ability to track progress helps me target specific strategies/sets of facts to help students move toward mastery. The kids love Fact Freaks for additional practice.

Factfreaks.com is better than any one of these math apps and portals districts are paying for.

I had a wonderful time at researchED. I saw teachers mobilized by concrete tools and nuanced discussions about the sci of learning. Once you catch the bug there’s no turning back. This work has consumed my life these last few years, and it has been the best thing I’ve ever done.
