Citizens' Climate Lobby chapter. We lobby Congress and other legislators to enact climate legislation strong enough to meet the existential climate challenge.

“The Day Privilege Stormed the Capitol: A Wake-Up Call for America" In the heart of winter, on January 6th, a storm brewed, not of nature but of human design, at the Capitol. This tempest was more than an electoral dispute; it was a raw, unmasked display of power, privilege, and domestic terrorism. It was a vivid, painful illustration of a struggle that extends beyond the ballot box – a struggle for the soul of America, where some cling to control at any cost, fearing the inevitable change that diversity brings. This insurrection was not merely an attack on democracy but an eruption of fear and entitlement. It was an outcry against the burgeoning voice of Black and Brown Americans, who, through their resilience and unwavering spirit, voted in record numbers. This pivotal moment in history was a resistance to the 'Browning of America,' an America that is evolving, shifting from monochromatic to a rich tapestry of hues, each thread integral to the nation's fabric. The siege at the #Capitol was a stark reminder that the America often idealized – the land of freedom and equality – remains an unfinished symphony. For too long, these ideals have been mere words for many, while a select few bask in their unearned privileges. The insurrectionists, draped in flags and fueled by unfounded claims, sought not to uphold democracy but to maintain a status quo that favors them, to keep the hands of power within their grasp. This event was a confrontation with our national identity, a mirror reflecting the deep-seated biases and systemic inequities that pervade our society. It was an outcry against the changing face of America, against the increasing visibility and influence of communities of color. The Capitol siege was not just about the outcome of one election; it was about who holds the power to shape our nation's future. However, amid this chaos, a new narrative emerges. A narrative where the #America envisioned by its founding ideals starts to become a reality for all, not just some. It's a narrative of an America where the power of diversity is recognized as our greatest strength, where every voice is valued, and every vote counts. This is the America that was defended not just by the brave officers at the Capitol but by every citizen who believes in justice, equality, and the true spirit of #democracy. This #insurrection, therefore, serves as a wake-up call, a call to action for every American to participate actively in the shaping of our nation's destiny. It's a call to move beyond passive acceptance of inequality and to work tirelessly towards an America that embraces all its people, in all their diversity, with open arms and a willing heart. The events of January 6th reveal the fragility of our democracy and the urgent need for vigilance, engagement, and a commitment to the ideals upon which America was founded – liberty, justice, and equality for all. When we see climate changing, we don't automatically jump on the human bandwagon, case closed. No, we rigorously examine and test all other reasons why climate could be changing: the sun, volcanoes, natural cycles, even something we don't know yet: could they be responsible? ..

At the hearing for the deputy @NASA administrator today, nominee Jim Morhard was asked by @EdMarkey if he agrees with the scientific consensus that humans are the dominant influence on climate. He said he couldn't say. Well, I'm a scientist, and I can. Here's why. (thread)

Don't tell me I'm too political. Telling climate activists they're too political is like telling doctors they're too medical. The climate crisis is a political problem, and our movement needs more political power. Period.

OUTRAGE: New report finds the oil industry is seeking a $30 billion taxpayer-funded bailout to plug 14,000 leaking wells in the Gulf of Mexico. This is on top of billions in public subsidies granted the industry. More grifting by the most destructive industry on earth.

The fossil fuel industry is riding very high--but so was the tobacco industry, and so were the Sacklers. The communities it has harmed (which means every community) may have some hope of fighting back now newyorker.com/news/daily-com…

A few personal notes: I was just at a NASA team meeting for 3 days in DC. The scientific findings are so fucked up. Experts on tropical rainforests told me privately that they think the Amazon has already passed its tipping point. Let that sink in. The world needs to know
