1/ One Jungkook post and my entire parenting strategy collapsed… My son starts high school next year, which means we have entered the terrifying parental side quest known as choosing options. Last week we looked at the list. Then today JK posted that little “looking for someone to film/edit for me..” situation on IG and suddenly I became the most supportive mother of audiovisual studies in France. So naturally, five minutes later, I drifted into my son’s room with all the subtlety of fireworks in a library and said: “Sweetie… you know… audiovisual, video editing that kind of thing could be really good for you. You already do a bit of it. You’re artistic. You learn fast.” He looked at me and said: “What’s the BTS angle here.” Not even a question. An indictment. Me: “There is no BTS angle.” Him: “Mom.” Me: “None. Zero. This is just me, a normal mother, having normal educational thoughts.” He stared at me. I stared at him. He kept looking at me the way customs officers look at someone carrying six perfumes and too much confidence. Then he said:“Anyway, that’s already one of the options I listed.” And I, suddenly becoming the least suspicious woman in France: “Well THERE you go. Great option. Very good. Love that. Excellent. Bye.” And I left before my face confessed. Twenty minutes later I hear: “MAMAAAAAN.” Not a soft mamaaan. A subpoena mamaaan. The kind that means one of three things: technical issue, emotional crisis, or you have been caught in 4K. I go to his room. He’s holding his tablet like evidence. It’s JK’s post. Me, performing innocence like my rent depends on it: “Oh. You check the boys’ IG now?” Him: “Hard not to, with your account, your algorithm, your opinions and JK reposting like a full-time employee.” Then he looked me dead in the face and said: “This morning you said it had nothing to do with BTS.” I said“Yes.” He said:“So you lied.” I said: “NO!” He pointed at the screen and went: “Then what does this say?” And because survival instinct fully packed a bag and left my body, I replied: “I don’t know. I don’t speak Korean yet.” He stared at me with the exhaustion of a middle-aged accountant and said: “Mom. ARMY translated it in two seconds. You people move like emergency services. Instagram has a translate button. We are not in The Da Vinci Code.” Then he goes: “So this random educational guidance session had NOTHING to do with the man on Instagram asking for an editor??.” And that’s when I realized I was no longer in a conversation. I was in cross-examination.
