As we were winding down a 6 hour visit to Tagus Estuary today, my guide Bernardo Barreto said, “I think I found something really special” and he pointed at a line of pink blobs about 2 football fields away from us in the distance. Preparing these talks for the camera show has been the most time consuming and challenging time of my career so, before I started travelling north tomorrow I decided to turn off my phone today and go do what I was born to do - take photos .. in the quiet .. and I hit the British wildlife jackpot! This is a Firecrest , the rarest of the two smallest birds in Britain . Finding one in the open is a once in 3 year moment and is usually totally random, and never where you think you’ve tracked them to . They are totally un-bait-able, they don’t visit bird feeders and you can’t predict them at all, you just need to know their call, and be ready . I think this was a sign, and a gift, from above . An American Tree Sparrow, a rare visitor to the Central Park Ramble, looks over what appears to be a mountain of snow. This sparrow wisely chose to forage underneath the bird feeders, where many seeds can be found. 🧡
