This may sound a little strange, but there’s something called pre-grief.
It happens when the thought of losing someone who is still alive occupies your mind, making you anxious and genuinely sad. Sometimes, you even cry. I’m talking about the kind where thoughts of losing a parent, sibling, or friend come out of nowhere. It can get so intense that you start imagining the funeral, then immediately try to push those thoughts away.
Then you notice you’re actually crying, feeling a deep sadness because you know, at some point, it will become real, and you don’t know how you’ll handle it. You’re not prepared for that kind of loss, and truthfully, you never really can be.
Pre-grief is a painful concept. It can make you feel like a terrible person for having those thoughts, even though you didn’t choose them. The hardest part is realizing that one day, it may turn into real grief, that it could become your reality. Déath feels final and cruel. It takes the people you love, and life is never quite the same again.
