Vireon Hydrogen Oy has been awarded a grant of 3.8 million Euros from Business Finland to build a 5MW electrolyzer facility in Jyväskylä, Finland. This groundbreaking project marks a significant milestone in the development of the Finnish hydrogen economy and the advancement of green hydrogen as a key enabler of zero-emission solutions. 💧 “We are immensely grateful to the Finnish Ministry and Business Finland for their vital support,” said Per Øyvind Voie, Managing Director of VIREON. “This grant will allow us to complete the green hydrogen value chain in Jyväskylä, in collaboration with our trusted partners at Cefmof.” Vireon is already in the process of establishing the Jyväskylä Hydrogen Hub. Phase one involves building a hydrogen refueling station for heavy-duty transport, partly funded by a prior EU grant to the company. The first users are already confirmed, including five hydrogen-powered buses set to enter regular bus traffic in Jyväskylä. During European Hydrogen Week in Brussels, we participated in a workshop titled “Hydrogen for mobility and residential applications: safety and permitting approaches around Europe” organized by the HYPOP project. This interactive session explored how we can increase public trust in hydrogen.💧 Cefmof is already actively working on this topic: we shared our insights from Jyväskylä, particularly the H2 exhibition at the Aalto2 Museum Centre and the hydrogen pizza oven at the “Hydrogen, Light, and Power” event. As part of a thought-provoking roundtable discussion with Joana Fonseca from Hydrogen Europe, Tomoho Umeda from Hydrogen Poland and Mattia Miglietta from Environment Park, Esa emphasized the importance of community-focused initiatives in advancing hydrogen adoption. Last week, Cefmof participated in the Sophia Business Angels International Entrepreneurship Venture Academy in the beautiful city of Nice, France. This dynamic event provided a great networking platform and an intensive pitch competition that brought out the best in innovative startups: pitching, refining with experts and pitching again. Last week we were one of the speakers at a webinar hosted by Intralink Japan on hydrogen’s future, where we delved into the evolving landscape of green investments in Finland and the country’s unique advantages in green hydrogen value chains. The Energia 2024 event in Tampere offered a comprehensive overview of the energy sector. 🔋 The event attracted a large number of participants, allowing us to network around hydrogen-related topics. The event provided a broad perspective on the hydrogen economy, covering production, distribution, applications, and safety concerns. Concrete examples, such as a hydrogen-powered generator and Fortum’s Kalla pilot plant, added inspiring practical insights to the discussions. It was encouraging to see the consensus in discussions that green hydrogen is enabling the energy transition, which is already underway! One of the highlights of our Japan trip was a visit to the Next Generation Energy System R&D Village "Nesrad" in Koufu, Yamanashi prefecture. The site runs various demonstrations of manufacturing, storing, transporting and using green hydrogen and is one of the biggest green hydrogen plants in Japan. 💧 It was especially thrilling to hear how research at Nesrad has led to impactful results—Suntory, one of Japan’s largest distilling companies, and Yamanashi prefecture will decarbonise Suntory Hakushu Distillery, one of Suntory’s largest factories, by using green hydrogen by 2025. This will happen by installing the "Yamanashi Model Power-to-Gas System" developed at Nesrad in the factory. Today, we had a press conference about exciting news! 🙌🏼 Vireon is set to construct Finland’s first large-scale green hydrogen refuelling station in Jyväskylä, marking a significant step forward as there are currently no operational H2 stations in Finland, made possible through a collaborative effort that includes also us, Cefmof, and the City of Jyväskylä. This station is the first of four strategically planned across Finland. ”Jyväskylä’s central location, combined with strong collaboration with Cefmof and the City, makes it an ideal starting point for our hydrogen infrastructure,” says Per Øyvind Voie, Managing Director of Vireon. “The opening of our first green hydrogen refuelling station and the launch of the hydrogen bus pilot are excellent starts for building a green hydrogen ecosystem in Jyväskylä,” Mayor Timo Koivisto stated. By 2025, five green hydrogen buses will be piloted in Jyväskylä, supported by a new hydrogen refuelling station. “This project aims to enhance urban transport and tackle environmental challenges, supporting Jyväskylä’s transition to sustainable solutions and contributing to a cleaner, healthier urban environment and a resilient local economy,” says Haruka Arai, Executive Director from Cefmof. Yesterday marked the third Hydrogen Networking Event, ”Vety-verkottamo”. Organised in collaboration with Jyväskylä Business Development Services, the event aims to connect stakeholders and explore the business opportunities within the hydrogen economy, particularly in Central Finland.💧 During the event, we discussed the types of innovations and new business ventures that can emerge around hydrogen, what's currently under development, and what activities are already taking place in Central Finland. In addition to our Cefmof representatives, Esa Eerola & Netta Hongisto, the speakers included Saara Viikilä from Helen and Valtteri Paakki from the Regional Council of Central Finland. The event took place at the Aalto2 Museum, where we also have the Green Hydrogen Power exhibition running until the 29th of September.
