However, I was shocked to learn from her just before being discharged that senior leadership at DHCFT stated I needed a Gender Recognition Certificate (#GRC) to be admitted to a female ward. This claim is both untrue & #Discriminatory. According to the Equality Act 2010 #EqualityAct #Equality, trans individuals have the right to be accommodated in wards that align with their gender identity, regardless of whether they possess a GRC. I have a GRC & had only heard this at the end of my stay - This is a poor attempt at cleaning up a mess you created. My passport gender marker is #Female. My new birth certificate is female. I have lived as a female, changed my name & committed myself to my new life for the past 8 years as a female.
Your decision to ignore these rights left me #Traumatised & #Vulnerable. I trusted DHCFT to provide a safe & supportive environment, but instead, I endured #Fear, #Isolation, and further #Harm. This experience has shaken my trust in your organisation & its ability to provide compassionate care for vulnerable individuals like me.
I urge you to reflect on my experience & take immediate steps to address the systemic failures within DHCFT that led to this. Patients, especially those from marginalised groups, deserve care that is safe, affirming, & aligned with their legal rights. I shouldn't have to advocate for myself time & time again. "𝘌𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘜𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦" you say? No, I'm just #Angry as would anybody in this situation & most of all #Disappointed.
One last thing - sort out this mess that you call an hospital; my bedroom was located over this #ConstructionSite (see attached photo). The radiator did not work. My bedroom most days was cold, damp & unfit to live in. "𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴" as I would put it.

My name is Rachel Jennings. I am a mental health student nurse & have worked for the NHS on & off for over nine years, including services within Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Most importantly, I am a patient & service user of DHCFT. I am a #Transgender woman who has been transitioning since late 2016. I began hormone therapy in 2018, including testosterone suppression & oestrogen supplementation, & I underwent chest gender-affirmation surgery in 2023. Why is this relevant?
On 30 November 2020, on my way to work, I was raped. My dignity was stolen by a man, leaving me with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (#PTSD). Shortly after, I suffered additional losses & hardships, including the death of my father, a life-changing illness, & severe financial distress—all in a short period. Following this event, your organisation diagnosed me with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (#EUPD).
Over the 2024 Christmas period, I was hospitalised after a suicide attempt. I was taken to intensive care, later stepped down, but ultimately returned to #ICU in an induced coma. I volunteered for informal admission but after assessments by mental health professionals I was detained under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act.
My most recent mental health admission with @PennineCareNHS, where I work, was vastly different. I was admitted to a female ward, surrounded by a supportive team, familiar staff, & access to psychological care. It was one of the best admissions I’ve had, if not the best. However, my recent admission with Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust @derbyshcft was a nightmare.
Despite my background & circumstances, senior leadership at #DHCFT decided to admit me to an all-male ward at the Radbourne Unit (Ward 34). This decision reopened the trauma of my #Rape & placed me in a vulnerable position. One night, a male patient—who later informed me that he had been transferred from prison—was playing excessively loud music on the ward similar to that of a nightclub. When I politely asked him to lower the volume so I could sleep, he exploded in rage. He screamed at me, made violent threats, & said he would rape & harm me. Though staff stepped in to de-escalate the situation, from that moment onward, I lived in constant fear for my life. I should never have had to ask in the first place if your staff was maintaining harmony.
I isolated myself in my room, consumed by hypervigilant & paranoid thoughts. I attempted #Suicide twice more while on the ward, desperate to escape the fear & humiliation. I was placed on 2-to-1 observation for my safety, but I never felt secure. Each time I passed the patient who had threatened me, he hurled jeering remarks & abusive comments. I believe this individual was manipulating the system to leave prison & obtain more comfortable living conditions.
DHCFT placed my life in direct danger. While the ward staff did their absolute best under the circumstances, the decision to admit me to an all-male ward was fundamentally wrong.
In agreement with my care team & doctors, I promised to keep myself safe in exchange for being considered for discharge. I lied, pretending I was fine & no longer suicidal, just to escape the torment I experienced under DHCFT’s care. The environment you placed me in tore apart my trauma & wounds repeatedly, leaving me isolated & consumed by my darkest thoughts. I spent most of my time asleep, as my dreams offered more solace than the waking nightmare I endured on your ward. I am still struggling to cope to #Survive.
Towards the end of my admission, I had a meeting with Hannah Burton, one of the nurse consultants who genuinely tried to address the situation. She made multiple attempts to relocate me to a more appropriate setting......
