100 years ago #OTD, 28 June 1919, the Versailles Treaty was signed, formally ending #WW1 between the Allied powers & Germany. It was five years to the day since Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination in Sarajevo triggered the conflict.

The Cenotaph in Whitehall started as a temporary memorial for Britain’s #WW1 Peace Day parade in 1919. Public response led to commissioning of the permanent monument - also by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens - unveiled on Armistice Day 1920.
