I know pine isn’t native to y’all in New Orleans, but it is here in Mobile. I’ve always been fond of pinewood. I used to have a little copse of crepe myrtle in my yard, but it seemed mostly dead; someone had trimmed it to the bone. It occasionally sprouted a few leaves, but never flowered. Maybe it could have had a second life as a bench. Alas, it’s not mine anymore.

Everyone talks about the live oaks and magnolia trees of New Orleans. And rightfully so. The Crepe Myrtle however, I believe more than any other tree sets the ambiance best.

Japan fines company’s for having fat employees and I think about that quite often. I’m trying to think of some “constitutional right” that would violate in America. Can’t think of one.

@RedLLBinTX Deduce it from what, exactly? Her siding against the administration one time, despite siding with Justice Thomas 81% of the time on contentious cases on the last term? That’s more than Kavanaugh btw

Justice Barrett never said that. She said there are threats against her life and requested increased security. She did not in any way indicate that she changed her vote or opinions in response to these threats. You schizos are just making that up.
Cari Kelemen@KelemenCari

Justice Barrett: the Communist intimidation tactics are working on me. Markwayne Mullin: the Communist intimidation tactics are working on me, too. We just celebrated the self-sacrifice, fortitude and bravery of our nation's founders. If you're not up to the job, step aside.

He voted no bc he wanted the SAVE Act to be passed as a stand alone bill He didnt want them to bundle it with a bunch of other crap that we dont want. Like Amendment 219 & others. Randy Fine has proved to be one of the only smart Representatives. Blizerian is dumb AF to be targeting Randy Fine. Fine is solid on 94% of everything. Theres 420 other reps that would have been way smarter to run against.

It surely does, but I think you’re using it overly broadly in the quoted post. Neuroticism is inappropriate, unreasonable, disproportionate. The vast majority of discussion that I’ve seen about daylight saving time or seat reclining seems reasonable and proportionate. Maybe you’ve dealt with a lot of people treating these issues as life-or-death, but—aside from a few neurotic weirdos who insist that permanent daylight saving time would gravely endanger schoolchildren—I haven’t seen a lot of neuroticism there.

In virtually every conceivable issue—from a small good like returning your shopping cart, to a great evil like trafficking enslaved children—the status quo benefits some and harms others. For bystanders who experience neither benefit nor harm, these issues might seem innocuous. They’re free to opt out of the discussion; they’re also welcome, despite their material disinterest, to honestly express their strong feelings on the subject. This user disavows both material interest and strong feelings (indeed, he describes those who profess either as “neurotic”); still, he sticks up for the status quo. Is there an explanation for this behavior other than bad faith?
upgyre@upgyre

@xwanyex It honestly reminds me a lot of the daylight savings debate. Where you have this cohort of neurotic people who are acting incredibly put out and aggrieved by something that other (most?) people, including myself, also personally experience and find to be not a big deal.

Two Chinese citizens legally come to the United States with temporary work permits. They have a kid in the United States. It is then discovered that they were Chinese government spies the whole time, and they are deported. Can the U.S. government strip their child of citizenship?

Every 4 years there's a red button and a blue button you have to press. If you press the blue button they close down nuclear power plants and everyone's thermostat is 95* If you press the red button they build a nuclear power plant, your energy cost goes down and you get 64*
Karen (pronounced Kah-ren)@pagingkaren

There's a red button and a blue button. If you press the red button, your home will be 78° while it's 95°+ outside. If you press the blue button, your home will be 64° but if more than 50% press blue, everyone's home will be 95° (and have no power)

Lindsey Graham was a specific type of neocon most people don't understand, and actively demonize. He didn't just wanna stuff his pockets with defense contract money. He didn't wanna just run around bringing gay sex and democracy to desert shitholes. Lindsey Graham, from the bottom of his heart, despised America's enemies. He wanted to blow up our enemies because they hated us, because they were contemptible creatures, and because he loved this place we call home. His love of America could make him look like he hated the world at times. And even as we leave the neocon era and move onto greener pastures, we do need a public and a Congress filled with people of a similar passion. Not a passion to change the world, but to bomb the shit out of it until it does things that benefit us. I obviously don't recommend every American hold this attitude. But it's obvious one of the cardinal sins of the Left and the global economy is to prop up the rest of the world at the expense of everyday Americans. If we can stop hundreds of thousands of drug-related deaths by bombing cartels, we should do that. If we can maintain a higher standard of living for Americans by protecting our hegemony, the hegemony should be protected with confident violence. And if we need to be respected and feared on the world stage by foreigners plotting to destroy us from within, then Americans need to have the part of Lindsey Graham's spirit that enabled us to be something those people fear. They need to believe the American public will support the American government using force to protect our interests and well-being. That we will retaliate if Americans are harmed by them. And right now, the public is far, far gayer than Senator Graham could ever be accused of being on this issue. So, that is my message on the late senator. He loved America enough to be ruthless towards our enemies. And as we get smarter, and pick our battles more wisely, we must keep that same fervor and willingness to be the world's superpower once again. God bless, and Rest in Peace.

@AnaKrivolapova I had an English teacher in high school. He allowed us to use 2 semicolons a year. He kept a tally on a board. He had a sledge hammer in the corner of class with a spray painted semicolon on it. If he saw a semicolon he’d hit the paper and give it an F. What’s wrong w semicolons

Good afternoon Sir. Indeed! Jefferson himself addressed this in Notes on the State of Virginia (Query XIV): “These [vestrymen] are usually the most discreet farmers… originally chosen by the house-keepers of the parish, but afterwards filling vacancies in their own body by their own choice.” That self-perpetuating aspect seems key to how the system kept its local character. I’d recommend checking out books on colonial Virginia by Philip Alexander Bruce esp: “Institutional History of Virginia in the Seventeenth Century.” Also - “The Old Dominion; her making and her manners” by Thomas Nelson Page Charles Sydnor’s writings are also worth checking out. Virginia governed her parishes before she governed her counties. The vestry was twelve freeholders, chosen for life. They bound out orphans, relieved their own poor, presented moral offenders, and walked every man's bounds. No distant bureaucrat issued their writs. Lose the habit of face-to-face judgment, and self-rule goes with it.
