70% of Kenyan consumer purchases happen in informal retail. Not supermarkets. Dukas. That means the neighborhood kiosk is now one of the most powerful food safety checkpoints in the country. What sits on that shelf matters enormously. CMA works with millers and retailers to ensure that certified, safe grain products reach every shelf, including the one around the corner from you. To duka owners: what do your customers ask about most when buying flour or cereals? Tell us below. 👇 #ChaguaSafeChaguaSmart #InformalRetail #FoodSafety #CerealMillers

The Informed Consumer Is the Protected Consumer Something encouraging is happening. Younger Kenyan consumers are asking more questions about what they eat. They're scrutinizing labels. Questioning quality. Demanding transparency. This shift is exactly what drives safer food systems. An informed consumer creates accountability across the entire value chain, from miller to shelf to table. CMA is committed to meeting that awareness with honest, certified, nutritious products. To young Kenyans: what food safety information do you wish was more accessible? Drop it below. 👇 #ChaguaSafeChaguaSmart #ConsumerAwareness #FoodSafety #NutritionKenya #YouthKenya

The Kadogo Economy & Food Safety The Kenyan consumer is buying smaller. More often. And under real financial pressure. As "kadogo economy" purchasing grows, the risk is this: smaller packs from unregulated sources can mean bigger safety gaps. At CMA, we believe affordability and food safety are not opposites. Every pack, regardless of size, must meet the same quality standard. Because a consumer buying 200g of flour deserves the same protection as one buying 2kg. Is your household checking quality labels on smaller pack sizes? 👇 hashtag#ChaguaSafeChaguaSmart hashtag#FoodSafety hashtag#KenyaConsumer hashtag#NutritionKenya hashtag#ConsumerAwareness

We have a diverse range of exhibitors today and tomorrow bringing together technology providers, millers, equipment manufacturers, premix suppliers, and quality control experts. From the flour industry to cutting-edge innovations supporting sustainable farming, each exhibitor plays a key role in strengthening the food system. Be sure to stop by and engage with them as we continue the conversation on food safety and explore practical solutions for tackling aflatoxin and advancing fortification. #ChaguaSafeChaguaSmart

Ann Muiruri -Apteca, focused on Aflatoxin, counting the cost for safe food for the second panel discussion. One of the key challenges highlighted was the presence of non-compliant millers who prioritise profit, even when dealing with maize contaminated by aflatoxin. Poor storage conditions were also identified as a major contributing factor. The discussion emphasised that ensuring food safety begins with self-regulation, as well as with stronger social media oversight and industry-wide regulation. Panellists also explored practical solutions, including improving access to aflatoxin testing and reducing taxes to lower testing costs. Early detection was emphasised as critical in helping farmers minimise losses and protect the food supply. #ChaguaSafeChaguaSmart

Elizabeth Cushny, Senior Programmes Manager for East Africa at TechnoServe moderated the first panel discussion, tackling a critical question: how can millers stay compliant with fortification while remaining competitive? The discussion unpacked what it truly takes to fortify well, from ensuring batch-to-batch uniformity to reducing wastage and avoiding overdosing. A key theme emerged: strong systems matter. When done right, fortification systems not only protect public health but also shift the economics, making compliant millers more visible and competitive, while pushing out non-compliance.

Our Board Secretary, Suad Abubaker, opened the conference with a strong call to action, highlighting the critical role of fortification and the risks posed by aflatoxin throughout the flour value chain. We look forward to the dialogue ahead as stakeholders come together to shape a safer, more resilient future for the industry, ensuring systems truly deliver on food security and safety. #ChaguaSafeChaguaSmart
