I find it suspect that nobody cares that Matt Damon (English) is playing a Bronze Age Mediterranean person in The Odyssey, but it's Lupita Nyong'o (Kenyan) where they draw the line on "historical accuracy." I think we all know what is going on.

A coworker told me her fiancé offered her $10,000 to call off their wedding. Ten thousand dollars. To not marry him. And she said no. I tried to keep a straight face, but all I could think was that this man had handed her cash and a warning label at the same time. If someone offers you five figures to avoid marrying them, that is not a relationship hurdle. That is an exit package. Personally, I would have accepted the money, wished him well, and started planning a very relaxing single life. Thank you for your honesty and your financial contribution. What better sign do you need that this marriage should not happen than the groom trying to buy his way out before the ceremony? At that point, the universe is........

🇺🇸 Chicago police had Derek Jordan, 42, boxed in an alley in Humboldt Park. He was wanted for a shooting on the expressway. He rammed a bus, a squad car, and hit a pedestrian trying to escape. Officer Walzer yells "Get out of the f***ing car or I'll kill you"... then fires 6 shots through a tinted window. Walzer is stripped of his badge. George Floyd's attorneys now represent the family. COPA is investigating. The bodycam shows a man trying to ram his way through a police perimeter. It also shows an officer who announced he was going to kill someone before he did. Watch it yourself. What do you see?

@CJHandmer @MVH1646777 Asking on behalf of a young engineer. It's not a rotten job; only the pay is below what could have been expected, but interesting projects, collegial co-workers. New arrivals will never get the deal their predecessors got. Same in many institutions.

Don't do a Masters unless you have a really good reason. I interview hundreds of mechanical engineering candidates. I can't think of a single candidate where a Masters made their candidacy stronger.

@CesarMarsais It depends on the sort of work and opportunities you want but in general the most ambitious engineers I would know do not work in government.

@CesarMarsais $2k/year increase every year for a masters? Lol! When I was at JPL cost of living increased 8-10% per year and salary increased about 2% over four years.

@CesarMarsais @MarioNawfal No, saying "I'll kill you" has been judged as excessive force and cops have faced charges, but "I'll shoot you" is fine

@NoahRevoy Amazing. I'm surprised that in the 16th c. your people (and of both sexes!) were analyzing texts. Until the beginning of the 19th c., 9/10 people were farmers and literacy was unnecessary for the average person. Your people must have been in a special class. What did they do?

Coach Noah Revoy | Arms Dealer For The Soul 🏴‍☠️
For about 450 years, my family recorded exactly how these selections were made. They had very strict criteria for who was allowed to marry into the family. Some of the factors were that they had to have blue eyes and full literacy, not just the ability to barely read, but the ability to read, explain texts, interpret them, and argue from those texts. This applied to both the men and women who married into the family. We also required people to be able to argue for their belief system, whatever it was. As long as it was not too far from ours, some accommodation could maybe be made, but it had to be argued from first principles, and you had to do that before approval would be given to marry one of the family members. You also had to come from a family with no indications of child abuse, and we would investigate that beforehand. You also had to come from a community or village where infanticide was not practiced. There were other things as well, but some things are family trade secrets.

@MVH1646777 @CJHandmer But if you were to work at your government engineering job and do a master's slowly at the same time? And get tuition reimbursement that would require you to stay three more years at your government job?

@CesarMarsais @CJHandmer I would gambit that 1. The lost wages and cost of the degree far outweigh the pay bump. 2. The compounding of your wage exceeds the pay bump. The sooner you start working the sooner your salary starts increasing. Also time is invaluable.

IMO, the biggest effect of "No tax on tips" was to destroy the giant bag of money that was waiting for the first major restaurant chain to implement a "No Tipping" policy." The sign at the door would read, "Our prices are 18% higher. No Tipping Please." A waitress's job just isn't that hard. In my opinion, if she's making the same wage without worrying about tips, she will be afraid to get fired. The only real downside is a catastrophic pay cut for hot girls.

This is supposedly at a @torchystacos in Houston... Rice village to be exact. Torchy's is not full service... It is counter service and you get your own drinks. 20% tip for you to bring my food to me is stupid, and if the restaurant does charge service fees then I will take it out of the tip I am over "tip culture"

Muslim migrants tell French girls: ‘I’m going to rape you, dirty white girl… You’re scared, dirty white girl?’ Why is the white girl “dirty”? It isn’t at its core a racial issue. The man who spoke those words was likely working from the assumption that is encapsulated in this Qur’an verse: “O you who believe, the idolaters only are unclean….” (Qur’an 9:28) The unbelievers are unclean, and also must be humiliated, as is the mandate in the verse immediately following that one, wherein the Qur’an tells Muslims to fight to ensure that “the people of the book” “feel themselves subdued” (9:29). Rape is a tool of that humiliation.

@CJHandmer Doesn't that extra money compound over time? Every future bump is bumped upon the sum of the previous bumps? My real question is: Is it a bad idea to work for Uncle Sam where your pay grade is determined by your degree?
