@JamesMelville Hard to argue that. Kenny was amazing but I’d maybe go Hoddle for pure silky skills.

In my opinion, Kenny Dalglish is the greatest British footballer in my lifetime of watching football from 1980-2025. Do you agree? And if not, who is?

In this game, if you can’t manage people effectively, make sure there’s someone on your team who can, or you’ll be in serious trouble. Trust me on that. I’ve earned my stripes in this field through qualification, experience, and a bit of luck along the way. But here’s the truth: the real greats I’ve had the privilege to learn from are always the strongest connectors first. Then they back it up with the knowledge to develop individuals and the understanding of how to win games. Anyone I work with knows, it’s always about connection first. Once that’s in place, then we go after the knowledge, the tactics, and the individual development. I recently saw a video circulating on social media of a coach acting out aggressively. I’ve got real respect for his methodology, but it showed a lack of understanding about the importance of connection first. I’ve been there myself, made the same mistakes and if he learns from it and grows, great. But if not, I’ll be honest… that path leads nowhere. I see so many young coaches these days with great knowledge, but they lack connection — and that’s where I always start when helping them grow. Most of the work I do these days is centred around helping coaches build connection first, and then layering in the tactics and training on top.
